Forget Gayle – 3 Top replacements Newcastle could target including £16m beast

Newcastle United endured a season filled with several highs and lows last term but they managed to stay afloat in the Premier League and finish in the 10th spot. One must credit Rafael Benitez for his work, considering the lack of new signings at the club.

However, the Magpies must look to strengthen their squad in the ongoing summer transfer window. But lately, there have been numerous reports suggesting that Dwight Gayle might leave the club.

While his presence will be missed, Newcastle could benefit from looking for his replacement. For a good part of the previous campaign, the Magpies were bereft of any attacking powers up front. Gayle, along with Joselu, failed to deliver the goods.

If Newcastle are to fare better next season, they must bring in a new striker. And if Gayle is truly leaving, Benitez could use those funds to procure a new player. With that in mind, here are 3 replacements for Gayle.

Bas Dost

Dost has been a long-term Newcastle target but now, the Magpies have a stunning chance to land him for free. Over the last week or so, numerous Sporting Lisbon players have terminated their contracts with the Portuguese outfit and Dost is the latest to join that list.

Considering their interest in him, Newcastle must definitely make a move for him at the earliest. He possesses impeccable skills and is adept at scoring. The fact that they can sign him for free is surely the cherry on top.

Salomon Rondon

Rondon played decently for West Bromwich Albion last season but his exploits were not enough to save them from relegation.

Newcastle have been linked with making a move for the striker in the summer. At a club of Newcastle’s stature, Rondon would not only revive his career but would also boost the Magpies’ options up front. However, he has a £16m release clause.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

This might sound odd but perhaps Benitez should consider retaining Mitrovic’s services and utilise him as the regular striker. Granted, his performances at St James’ Park were severely erratic.

But his loan stint with Fulham showed that he is capable of wreaking havoc upon opponent defenders. Maybe Newcastle should provide him with a second chance before cutting ties completely.
