Manchester United opinion: Should the Red Devils go for Declan Rice?
It has been an absolutely terrible season for Manchester United. They’re back at the very start when Sir Alex Ferguson left the club. They’ve been in a freefall since then and while the Mourinho era did halt the downfall for a while, it wasn’t enough.
Changing the attitude of the team will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job. The rot left over from the Mourinho era has seeped into the team at levels that even Solskjaer may not be able to solve. He will have to change the entire team but his main issue will be adding quality players in the right areas.
The likes of Nemanja Matic, Ashley Young and even Alexis Sanchez all need replacing among many others. Add that to the fact that the club have already lost Ander Herrera (BBC) and that further adds to the new manager’s problems.
The Red Devils have to change things around, especially if they ever want a chance of finishing in the top four next season. The Evening Standard has reported that Manchester United are keen on a move for Declan Rice and Idrissa Gueye.
Both the defensive midfielders have had a fantastic season and with the club looking for replacements, they need a move for either man. However, it’s Declan Rice they really need to consider with the 21-year-old having a fantastic breakout season.
He’s missed just four games this season, and a majority of that came at the start of the season. Cool, calm and composed on the ball, Rice has the ability to dictate play.
His defensive reading is downright incredible as a former centre-back and that has made his transition into a defensive midfielder that much easier.
It’s that ability of Declan Rice that Manchester United need more than anything. That kind of defensive style is exactly what will help the likes of Pogba, Rashford and even Jesse Lingard to roam about the pitch with no defensive concern.
That’s what Rice can add and what Manchester United desperately needed this season from Nemanja Matic. The Serbian is ageing and not doing a very good job of that, which has really been evident throughout this season.
It shows just why a change is needed at the club and while Matic was once one of the best in his position, times have changed.
