Forget It Conte – Why Chelsea Should Avoid Doing This Grave Mistake Of A Transfer

Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas started the new season in an unfamiliar position – on the bench. Manager Antonio Conte used a 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 formation for the opening game against West Ham. Nemanja Matic, who had a very poor 2015-16 campaign, was selected ahead of the Spaniard. Even Matic’s form shown no signs of improving even into the new season, it was clear that Fabregas was not going to be brought in. Rumours claim that Fabregas has been offered to Juventus, who are short of numbers in midfield after the departure of Paul Pogba.

Admittedly, Fabregas was not at his best last season. Some would even go as far as saying that Fabregas’ inability to make an impact on the pitch had a direct influence on Chelsea’s disastrous campaign. From scoring three goals and creating 18 assists in 33 league appearances, Fabregas came up with only five goals and seven assists last season. These are bad numbers for a playmaker whose team wants to win the title. However, it would be extremely wrong to judge a player on the back of one campaign.

The blues signed N’Golo Kante from Leicester City for a whopping £30 million after one excellent season with the Premier League champions. If this represents a quality buy, judging a player like Fabregas in one season alone is the equivalent of madness in football. Fabregas has been one of the consistent playmakers in the last decade. His ability to open up defences with incredible vision are second to none. At 29, it would be extremely difficult for Chelsea to extract a substantial transfer fee from clubs interested in signing Fabregas.

Hence, the only reason Chelsea would want to sell Fabregas is to save on his wages and create less competition in the squad. The Spaniard still has three years left on his contract. The blues may very well keep him until the end of his deal. It would mean little damage to the books, as he cost only £30 million in the first place. A player like Fabregas costing just £30 million can only be seen as a bargain in today’s market. For all the brilliant qualities in Chelsea’s squad, the club still do not have a player capable of being the like-for-like replacement for Fabregas.

His position in the Chelsea squad will become evident when the season goes beyond the crunch December fixtures.
