Why Leicester City Must Not Sack Claude Puel In The Summer

For a club that managed to win the 2015-16 Premier League title by some distance, Leicester City have dropped down to mediocrity ever since. The club has not managed to put up a fight since that historic season and after sacking Ranieri and surviving a relegation scare last season, they were expected to put up a fight this time around.

The appointment of Craig Shakespeare in a full-time role meant that the players got what they wanted and everything was supposed to work out fine for them.

However, Shakespeare could not replicate the results that saw them escape relegation and because of this, he was sacked. However, instead of making a move for a big manager, Leicester settled for Claude Puel.

He took over from Shakespeare and managed to direct the club to mid-table safety but the team’s recent 5-0 loss to relegation-threatened Crystal Palace meant that his future was cast in further doubt, as there were reports prior to the game that the club were beginning to lose patience.

The Foxes were listless against the Eagles, who ran rings around their team and condemned Leicester to one of their worst defeats in recent history. This, in addition to Leicester fans not exactly warming up to their new manager, means that Puel faces a fight for his future at the club.

Not a good idea to sack him

Despite the poor result over the weekend, Leicester must think twice before sacking Puel. After he took over from Shakespeare, Puel has at least managed to get the team to play some high intensity, flowing football that has seen them escape the relegation zone. For a club that didn’t invest much over the summer, it is the least that they can expect from their manager.

The least that Leicester can do is afford Puel an entire season to stamp his authority on the squad. If the club’s management team decides to sack Puel, the club could find itself facing relegation once again next year.

Even if Puel is not popular amongst the fans, one thing that is certain is that he can avoid relegation. He is a decent manager with a flair for attack-oriented football and he should be allowed to have a say in the summer transfers.

If Leicester do sack him, they will be facing uncertainty once again and this would mean them beginning from the scratch in a league that is infamous for not allowing an inch of breathing space.

Over to you, Leicester.
