Why A Loan Move For Manchester United Duo Scott McTominay And Ethan Hamilton Is Not What Rangers Need

As per reports from the Sun, Scottish Premiership side Rangers are interested in taking promising midfielders Scott McTominay and Ethan Hamilton on loan from English giants Manchester United in the January transfer window.

The Gers have had another underwhelming start to the new campaign compared to the lofty expectations placed on them and currently sit 4th in the Premiership table, following their 2-0 shock defeat at the hands of Hamilton Academical over the weekend. Having sacked Pedro Caixinha from the managerial position, the club are yet to appoint a new permanent replacement, with Graeme Murty taking over as the caretaker manager for the time being.

So, it is a bit of a quandary as to how players are being linked with the club, without a new manager at the helm as of yet. However, it seems like the Gers will test the waters with a loan bid for the United duo come January.

McTominay, this season, has very much become a part of the senior setup under Jose Mourinho and went on to make his debut in the UEFA Champions League recently, and also penned a new long-term contract with the club. In total, he has made 4 appearances for the seniors, while featuring in 4 games for the reserves so far this term. The manager has spoken highly of the midfielder and has previously made it clear that the 20-year old will be staying put at the club.

Hamilton, on the other hand, has been a regular for the United U-23 side in the Premier League 2 and has featured for the U-19s in the UEFA Youth League as well, making a total of 11 appearances across all competitions for the youth teams, in which he has scored and assisted one goal apiece.

Having come through the Hutchison Vale youth system – the same academy as former United midfielder and Scotland international Darren Fletcher, the 19-year old has been tipped to make it big at both club and country level. A versatile operator, Hamilton has mainly played as a central midfielder this term, but can easily slot in on the left-hand side of the midfield and even deputise at left-back, as he has done at various youth levels in the past.

Both the Scottish youngsters possess great potential and promise without a doubt and are meant for greater things in the future. However, given the current state that the Gers find themselves in, it is unlikely that bringing in two inexperienced youngsters into the fold would help their cause.

Given their plight in the Premiership, the Ibrox outfit are in need of turning things around quickly in the second-half of the season and bringing in tried and tested players would serve the team much better in that regard.
