Forget it Pep – Man City signing this expensive Barcelona star would be nothing but a waste

Manchester City do not need Dembele and it’s better if they avoid him

Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus – these are the options that Manchester City have at their disposal.

Every star in the list is good enough to play for the top European teams and yet, it seems like Pep Guardiola isn’t happy. English news outlet the Manchester Evening News has revealed that Manchester City lead the race for Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.

The Frenchman made the move to Barcelona in the summer of 2017. While he struggled initially, this season has seen a change in Dembele’s performance and attitude, with the 22-year-old outdoing Philippe Coutinho.

However, despite all that, the rumours haven’t stopped, with the youngster being linked to a myriad of clubs including Arsenal (h/t Evening Standard), Manchester United (h/t Daily Star), Liverpool (h/t Sport) and PSG (h/t ESPN).

This is no surprise given the 21-year-old’s lack of game time, but now that Dembele is back in manager Ernesto Valverde’s graces, it’s a shock that he is still being linked with a move to Manchester City.

Given the vast array of attackers that Pep Guardiola has at his disposal, the move makes no sense unless the club loses either Leroy Sane or Raheem Sterling, two key players. Both of them have been excellent under Guardiola, with Sane winning the PFA young player of the year last season, while Sterling finished the season with a stunning 23 goals and 17 assists in all competitions.

If City do bring in Dembele, then the Frenchman would expect first-team football on a regular basis, which means that one of Sterling or Sane would lose his place.

The Englishman at the moment is better than both Sane and Dembele. While Ousmane Dembele certainly has time and the talent to become a world-class star, he isn’t worth it for Manchester City or Pep Guardiola.

For someone else like Arsenal or even Manchester United, a move would make sense given the fact that the two sides need a Dembele-esque star, but not for City.

Moreover, any transfer fee for the 21-year-old might have to be above the £135million that Barcelona paid Borussia Dortmund for him, since it has only been one year since the move happened. Though it is within Manchester City’s reach, it isn’t worth it to spend on someone they clearly do not need.
