Forget Matic – Why United Will Be A Great Move For Eric Dier

Following their £75m (another £15 add-ons) signing of long-term Chelsea target Romelu Lukaku from Everton, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to add another Premier League star for the upcoming campaign.

The Portuguese tactician is interested in reuniting with the Blues midfielder Nemanja Matic, but the relationship between two sides have worsened after the Lukaku saga and Chelsea are not willing to let their midfield general leave to a direct Premier League rival. Mourinho, the former Chelsea boss, has now shifted his focus to Tottenham’s Eric Dier, who reportedly, is open to joining the Red Devils.

Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, previously approached for the 23-year old England international who is under contract until 2021, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy ruled out the move as he refused to sell any of his first team regulars prior to the forthcoming season. Nevertheless, the Red Devils are now more determined to conclude a deal and are willing to make an improved bid of £50m to test Tottenham’s resolve. Also, they are ready to pay more than double of Dier’s current £70,000 weekly wage that has further persuaded the player to complete a move.

Dier, who progressed through the youth ranks of Portuguese giants Sporting CP, completed a switch to the North London outfit in August 2014. He soon impressed with his versatility and despite being used as a right-back in his early days, Dier was switched to central defence and performed extraordinarily in his debut campaign in English football. He again had an alteration of role the following season and Spurs boss Pochettino shifted him to midfield alongside Mousa Dembele.

Dier enjoyed his best season in the middle of the park that earned him a senior international call up for the Three Lions. He again spent the majority of last term in Spurs’ defence due to the arrival of Victor Wanyama in midfield and injury concerns of centre back duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen. His versatility, thus, is a major attribute than can be quite utilitarian for Manchester United who are spending big in order to restore their lost pride and reconquer the league.

The former England youth international previously revealed himself to be a United fan and divulged Roy Keane as his favourite while growing up. In an interview back in 2010, Dier expressed his desire to complete his ‘dream’ Manchester United move. He told BBC Sport in 2010,

‘If the offer came today, I wouldn’t say I’d take it because I’m not sure it’s the right time,  but if I cemented a place in Sporting’s first team and felt I was ready, then it would be very hard to turn down.’

The Englishman, thus, now has an opportunity to pursue his dream and might force a move to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
