Forget Moreno – Signing England’s U20 captain would provide Liverpool with perfect cover for Andy Robertson

Why Liverpool should sign Lloyd Kelly from Bristol City

According to a report in Bristol Live, Premier League giants Liverpool are one of the clubs who are interested in signing young Bristol City defender Lloyd Kelly. The youngster has broken through the first-team at Ashton Gate and has a bright future ahead of him.

The 20-year-old was made England U20s captain earlier this season, a feather in the cap of the young and upcoming player. He has been impressive both for club and country, channelling the reputation he gained as an Academy talent.

As per the report, Liverpool were one of the few clubs who watched Kelly in Bristol’s 2-0 loss at Leeds United. Jurgen Klopp needs to sign a left-back to provide cover for Andy Robertson as Alberto Moreno’s future is uncertain.

Here’s why the Reds should do everything to sign the teenager in the January transfer window:

An ideal player to aid Robertson whenever needed

Predominantly a left-back, Lloyd Kelly is perfectly adept in playing as a centre-back if needed. He is physically strong with a height of around 6ft, which helps in winning aerial duels at a canter. The youngster has won headed duels at an average of 2.5 per game, epitomizing his strength in the air. Even Virgil van Dijk would be impressed with that number!

The 20-year-old possesses raw pace, which full-backs need to have to be effective on both sides of the field. He can dribble past opponents to create room for himself to either deliver a cross or a cutback. Defensively, he has registered an average of 1.5 per tackles per game, depicting his propensity of stopping wide men from crossing the ball easily.

Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool need a left-back because they cannot rely on Andy Robertson to play every game of the season. The Scotsman will need a rest occasionally and that is where the Reds need quality to turn to.

Also, it is safe to suggest that Moreno doesn’t help himself whenever given a chance.

Hence, it is imperative from Klopp’s point of view to get a talented full-back and to groom him before integrating him into the team gradually. Lloyd Kelly is an exciting talent and he should jump at the chance to move to Anfield and play for probably one of the best teams in Europe. There will be a lot of things to learn which will help his progress.
