Forget Superstars, Why This £10m Starlet Could Bolster Manchester United’s Attack

Memphis Depay has been a hot prospect in Europe for the past few years and has been a Dutch sensation in the World Cup and in the Eredivise this season. Supposedly, United want to join the race to land this £10million rated lad, who plies his trade as a Left Attacking Midfielder in PSV Eindhoven, and bolster their team. Here are three reasons why this move could work out very well, which makes him a good target to pursue.

1. He is very young, so it’s worth investing on him.

Depay would turn 21 in the coming week and already has World Cup experience apart from being an integral part of PSV Eindhoven. He has been consistently performing and has shown that flair and ability to develop into a world class player. He’s a guaranteed talent and investing on him would definitely be fruitful. Youngsters get a good opportunity in Man Utd and Depay would develop multiple folds with Premier League experience.

2. He has the marks of consistency and a future big game player.

Depay has a tally of 16 goals in 21 appearances out of which 13 goals came in the Eredivise out of 16 appearances. His qualities are clear as his standout attributes are- powerful right footed shots, dribbling, passing and his pace. Depay is a standard goalscoring playmaker in spite of having only 3 assists in the league. His distance shooting and finishing gets him the goals and is often at the end of good offensive moves, but he also steps up with 2.2 key passes per game. He’s the typical left midfield player who’d cut into the center and attack exceedingly well in a free form build-up.

It is not that there aren’t any weaknesses for the youngster. He is yet to develop his strength on the ball and his ability to retain possession in tighter situations. In Manchester United, he is likely to get trained in playing a patient possession game where he’d develop more composure and techniques on the ball that will help him to hold on better. But these are hallmarks of a strong offensive player who’d develop into a balanced out and out attacker given the right kind of coaching and opportunities.

3. Louis van Gaal is well suited for Depay.

Depay and van Gaal share the same nationality – Dutch, and the United boss knows the lad well and has coached him in the World Cup. The connection between the two would help both the team and the player’s development as the manager would be able to get the best out of his home talent.

Van Gaal is known for being a very popular coach among his compatriot players such as Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Robin van Persie among others. Depay would find it easier to play for him than other managers in top teams, at least because they know each other already. Daley Blind is a good example of a known Dutch player joining Van Gaal at United and excelling.
