Forget Tierney – Here’s why Arsenal reviving interest in signing this budding Argentine ace makes more sense

Arsenal news: Arsenal should revive their interest in Nicolas Tagliafico

According to a report in the BBC, Celtic have rejected a bid from Arsenal for their star left-back Kieran Tierney. Arsenal have been on the lookout for a left-back all summer and the Scottish international would be a fantastic addition for his defensive and offensive contributions but Arsenal can’t be spending over the odds for his signature.

With this in mind, Arsenal have to look at other options and one of those is a player they have been linked with Nicolas Tagliafico. The young Argentinian international had a fantastic season for Ajax, following his exploits at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Tagliafico is also capable of playing a more offensive role or a defensive role for the team. He plays in a high-pressing system at Ajax and this would make his transition to the Premier League and Arsenal a seamless one.

Unai Emery’s Arsenal covered a lot of distance last season and will be hoping they can add some quality to a hard-working squad. Tagliafico had the season of his life after winning the domestic treble with Ajax last season and knocking out the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus to make it to the Champions League semi-final, only to get knocked out by Tottenham Hotspur after the most incredible comeback.

Tagliafico only joined Ajax last season but has adapted to European football seamlessly. He made 46 appearances in all competitions and scored 6 goals and provided 6 assists. Tagliafico’s strengths lie in the attacking areas as his stats would suggest.

Defensively, Tagliafico depends on his position to anticipate danger as he’s not the fastest of full-backs. He is also very quick to slide to win a tackle and often does this successfully due to his positioning on the field.

Arsenal could get Tagliafico just as he is heading into his prime. Tagliafico has had an interesting career path having never played outside of his native Argentina with spells at Banfield and Independiente before his move to Ajax last season.

Conclusion

Arsenal often used at three-man backline last season with Saed Kolasinac. Tagliafico would help Arsenal go back to a back 4, which seems Unai Emery’s preferred system at most of his previous clubs.

Tagliafico would a valuable addition to helping strengthen this Arsenal backline. Arsenal should look at this Argentinian if the move for Tierney doesn’t take materialize.
