Why Signing Karim Benzema From Real Madrid Can Help Arsenal’s Conversion Rate

Arsenal are reportedly interested in a move to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. The Gunners are understood to be preparing a bid of £36million and could land him in January. He has been targeted by Arsene Wenger for quite some time now and it will be interesting to see if the French manager is able to acquire his services this time. The player’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu has been clouded with uncertainty and he could walk out of the club in the upcoming winter window.

Although Benzema does not lack talent, something has been amiss for him at Real Madrid. The recent El Clasico game was perhaps the best example for the same. He worked tirelessly on the pitch and gave it his all but he simply could not score. He has scored just 2 goals this season in 12 appearances for Los Blancos and his time at the club could be coming to an end.

As it is, Zinedine Zidane’s men have been struggling quite a lot this season and are likely to scout the market for a better option up front – somebody who can bring in goals. In such a situation, it makes no sense for Benzema to stay back and fall down the pecking order, hence making a move to Arsenal sound plausible enough.

As far as the Gunners are concerned, they are in a decent position but it is not enough. Currently gracing the 6th spot in the league table, they are 3 points adrift of 5th-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Last season itself, chants of ‘Wenger Out’ intensified after Arsenal failed to secure a top-four finish and if the situation repeats once more, the club will find it hard to neutralise the growing anger and frustration among the fans.

Despite having world-class players like Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette in the ranks, Arsenal have struggled to score goals on certain occasions. Hence, a move to sign another striker does not seem like a bad option and Benzema does seem like a step in the right direction.

Granted, he has found it tough to stay on track this season but at Real Madrid, he always was at the risk of getting overshadowed by Cristiano Ronaldo. To be a part of the same team as Ronaldo’s, as a striker, and to excel the benchmarks set by a player as iconic as Ronaldo is quite tough and perhaps that pressure has affected Benzema.

At Arsenal though, he is likely to get off to a better start and receive a clean slate. Also, considering the support provided by the likes of Sanchez and Ozil (if they stay back), Benzema could be able to score better, thus solving Arsenal’s conversion issues. The Gunners are capable of scoring a lot many goals and should be walking away with easy victories but they have struggled to an extent in those areas.

Also, Wenger can use a 2-striker formation with Lacazette and Benzema playing together. Furthermore, considering how effective Olivier Giroud has been, Wenger can use him in this setup, thus utilizing all his best attacking players. Hence, signing a player like Benzema could give them greater depth in attack, while also helping them to score more goals.
