Go For It Christiansen – Leeds Signing This Championship Midfielder Would Represent Great Value For Money

Jackson Irvine

Why Jackson Irvine Would Be A Good Signing For Leeds United

Leeds United are reportedly interested in bringing Burton Albion’s highly rated central midfield player Jackson Irvine to the club. Both Irvine and his club had an excellent season last time around in the Championship and the 24-year-old Melbourne-born player is definitely on the up.

After an ultimately unsuccessful spell at Celtic between 2013 and 2015, Irvine began climbing the football ladder with good spells at both Kilmarnock and Ross County in Scotland before his move to England and another modest ascension would be appropriate about now.

Burton paid a club record fee for Irvine when he signed for the Midlands club last summer but has seen his stock rise considerably since then with some excellent displays in the middle of the park for the Brewers.

Irvine would create even more competition for the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira and probably for not too big a fee, something which is always attractive to the board of a Championship club and especially this one it would seem.

Money is tight right now for Leeds United, as it has been for some time, though they cannot afford to aim too low when bringing in new recruits and so Irvine would be seen to provide just the right balance. His year in the Championship has proven to the club that he knows how to handle things at this level and that’s a pretty big deal.

Toumani Diagouraga and Vurnon Anita are also options in Leeds’ central midfield positions but neither will be fully relied up on there. In the case of the latter, he is also expected to cover the defensive positions and the right-back position in particular, where he played most of last season for Newcastle United, winning the title along the way.

Christiansen is not stupid though and knows that to win this division, you need a good size squad, providing plenty of quality cover in all areas, something evidenced by his pursuit of Aden Flint from Bristol City for his defence.

Irvine is a player on the up and that is always a good thing to take into consideration when thinking about signings and there is little doubt if he would represent good value. It’s not completely clear yet what sort of fee Burton will look for, but given their own situation, any reasonable amount would be gratefully received. So it seems a deal for the midfield man could indeed be struck soon.
