Go for it Claude Puel: Leicester City should go all out and splash £3m on this Northern Irish veteran this summer

Why Leicester City must go all out to sign Jonny Evans from West Bromwich Albion

Leicester City are reportedly looking to revisit their interest in West Bromwich Albion centre-back Jonny Evans. The Foxes were keen on signing him last summer and they even had a bid of £23million turned down. Evans continued playing with the Baggies and even though he was widely speculated to move in the January window and join big clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal, a deal did not materialise.

Now, with the summer window coming up, it makes sense for Claude Puel to revive the club’s interest in Evans, given the fact that they could land him at a lot cheaper rate. There is a clause in his current contract with the club which reportedly states that Evans could be sold for just £3million if West Brom end up getting relegated.

And with about 10 games to go, Alan Pardew’s men continue to grace the bottom spot. In fact, they are easily one of the favourites to get relegated and if that were to happen, the Foxes could stand to gain from it.

West Brom have been in poor form ever since the season began and that eventually saw Tony Pulis get sacked. They appointed Alan Pardew in charge and to be honest, he has made things worse than before. Hence, there are now rumours suggesting that they will sack him as well once the season comes to an end.

Basically, things are crumbling down in the Baggies camp and to that end, Evans himself might be tempted to move to Leicester, who have remarkably turned things around for themselves under Puel’s watchful eyes.

One might argue that it is futile for Leicester to target Evans at a time when Aleksandar Dragovic has been putting in solid performances day in and day out. He might be on loan from Bayer Leverkusen but the foxes have the option to purchase him permanently in the summer.

There is no doubt that they would do that but there has been no conclusion when it comes to Robert Huth’s contract. In fact, Puel has even admitted that Huth could leave this summer once his contract comes to an end.

That will leave Puel with the likes of Dragovic (if they sign him permanently), Wes Morgan, Harry Maguire and Yohan Benalouane as centre-back options. The Foxes will need added squad depth in that area to put up a solid defensive front even during injuries and the fact that they can land the former Manchester United star at such a cheap rate should definitely prompt them to actively pursue a deal for him in the summer window.
