Go for it Emery – Five reasons why Arsenal must sign this £26million midfield powerhourse

According to a report by BBC, Arsenal are edging closer to a move for Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira this summer. Unai Emery has an uphill task ahead of him and the new Arsenal manager is wasting no time in the ongoing transfer window.

Despite having a limited budget, the former PSG boss has quite aggressive with his approach when it comes to targeting players and it looks like Torreira is next on his wishlist. The player seems promising enough and here are five reasons why Arsenal must definitely pursue a move for him.

Ideal central midfield fit

It goes without saying that Arsenal lacked power and consistency in the middle of the park last season. The essence of a strong team lies in their midfield and the Gunners lacked quality and depth in that area. But with a player as technically gifted as Torreira in the mix, Arsenal will go a long way in fixing their woes. He is a natural ball winner as well, making him a great addition to the London-based outfit.

Ability to use his height to great effect

Now, one might look at Torreira and immediately write him off due to his height. The player is merely 5 ft 5 inches and yet, he is a proven midfield powerhouse with the ability to use his height to his advantage. With his quick feet, Torreira is a force to reckon with and does not shy away from harassing his opponents. Paired with the likes of Aaron Ramsey or Granit Xhaka, Torreira would work wonders.

Experience

Despite being just 22 years of age, Torreira has been a regular starter for Uruguay over the last 3 years. In addition to that, the youngster has cemented a spot for himself in the Sampdoria first-team and he truly worked wonders for them in the past season. With all this experience, the midfielder would be a great option for the Gunners.

Works well in a pressing system

Emery is known for his aggressive pressing tactics and given Torreira’s calibre, he should be a natural fit. Sampdoria are famous for employing similar blueprints in the Serie A, meaning the Uruguayan will have a fair idea of his duties at the Emirates.

The price tag

To sign a player of Torreira’s calibre for £26million is nothing short of a coup. Despite the fact that Arsenal are in need of a massive reshuffle, Emery has a limited budget to work with. And with that in mind, it would be a great move for the manager to sign a promising talent like Torreira who would not only solve their immediate concerns but also be a viable option for the long-term.
