Go For It Harry Redknapp – These 2 Transfers Could Massively Improve Birmingham Next Season

2 Transfers That Could Massively Improve Birmingham Next Season

With Harry Redknapp now involved at the Blues, it’s fair to say we can expect a few new signings at St Andrews in the coming weeks and months. Redknapp is well known for his wheeling and dealing in the transfer market and I would even expect a few familiar faces to turn up at Birmingham before we reach September and the transfer deadline.

I would usually be critical of Redknapp’s penchant for bringing in old boys wherever he goes, but in Birmingham’s case it may well be just what they need. A huge change is required at the club and Redknapp giving out some ‘jobs for the boys’ in order to hit the ground running next season shouldn’t be something we should be too quick to criticise.

In fact, anything that can improve this team in order to bring back the good feeling around the club would be welcomed. Here are three transfer moves Redknapp may make during the current transfer window:

Benoit Assou-Ekotto (Metz)

Despite claims that Assou-Ekotto may quit football for, let’s say “other career opportunities”, this is apparently wide of the mark.

The 33-year-old is currently under contract at Metz but will be available in the summer and could add to his 186 league games in England for Spurs and QPR. Assou-Ekotto would provide some attacking impetus from full-back, another thing missing from what has been in recent years a particularly boring and pedestrian Birmingham City side.

Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy)

Another former Redknapp regular at Tottenham and a former Aston Villa player; Ireland’s all-time record goal scorer would be a welcome addition to the Birmingham City cause if Harry gets his way. At 36, Keane is still going strong and has netted 103 goals for Galaxy in his 5 seasons at the club.

Coming back to play at an English pace is not something that would hinder the natural goal-getter in him and it would be a fascinating move should the man from Dublin decide to swap living in LA on a high salary, to living back in Birmingham. The move looks realistic and would be a coup for the Blues.

Whoever Birmingham bring in, they have to be the type to bring the crowds back and for just one season, the ex-Tottenham brigade could be just what the doctor ordered.
