Three Reasons Why Tomas Kalas Would Be A Good Signing For Fulham

Some recent reports suggest that Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas is in advanced talks with recently-relegated Hull City about a move to the club, though discussions are still taking place regarding a permanent deal with Fulham.

Kalas spent last season on loan at Craven Cottage and proved to be a very popular signing, playing his part in Fulham’s excellent campaign which ended in them achieving a play-off spot. Here we look at the three main reasons why Fulham should get the deal done.

Maintaining The Status Quo

Well, maintain it in the defence at least! Any defensive problems they had last season were less to do with the quality of the players in those positions, but more with their care-free style of play. Kalas was instrumental last season and if anything will probably improve, it is the 24-year-old centre-back.

When a club has had a good season, one of the key mistakes they make is to think too much about new signings and ignore the importance of retaining their best players. If they keep Kalas, their defence would remain settled and that could be crucial.

He Has Premier League Pedigree

The opinion that when playing in the Championship, players need to have some rough and tumble about them and play a long-ball game is an old hat. Bournemouth, to use one example, passed their way out of this division and it’s much simpler than people think.

You really just need top individual quality as a foundation. The same thing happens in horse racing all the time; often there is a ‘group’ horse placed in a handicap race and frankly, regardless of the conditions they are simply too good for the opposition.

This has been the case in the Championship with Newcastle United not once, but twice, with the likes of Coloccini, Nolan, Carroll, Shelvey, Ritchie and others simply being too good for the league. Kalas looks like he is definitely a Premier League player and so if Fulham want to be promoted, they could do with as many of those as they can get.

Value For Money

Should Kalas be signed permanently, the fee isn’t going to be sky high. It will certainly be affordable and will not pose as a risk. This means that he represents a saving in truth and that leaves whatever transfer kitty they have, plus any money the potential Sessegnon and Cairney sales may bring, free to fill other positions. They need a top striker this summer, and they are not cheap! Kalas would be a great investment and a cheap one. So Fulham can use the rest of the money to buy a striker too.
