Go for it Klopp – Liverpool must do everything in their powers to sign this top class £44m shot stopper

Alisson Becker

Why Liverpool Must Sign Alisson Becker To Replace Error-Prone Mignolet

Liverpool are reportedly interested in a January move to bring AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker to Anfield. Jurgen Klopp is understandably keen on strengthening his forces at the back and after securing a deal for Virgil Van Dijk, the next agenda on the manager’s list should be to sign a goalkeeper. Becker is a player that Liverpool have been targetting for quite some time now.

The 25-year-old shot stopper is already being reckoned as one of the best in the Serie A and for all right reasons. Last season, he had to remain satisfied with playing second fiddle to Wojciech Szczesny but ever since he joined Juventus, Becker has been in exceptional form. This might be his first season as a regular for the Italian club but throughout the season so far, Roma have conceded only 16 goals and that is quite a testament to Becker’s skills in goal.

He is feisty and is blessed with lightning-fast reflexes – two skills that are missing in Liverpool’s current set of keepers. Simon Mignolet has endured a shocking slump in form whereas Loris Karius has just been painfully underwhelming. The Reds have conceded a whopping 29 goals already, which is the largest figure among the other top-five clubs in that category.

In one-on-one situations, Becker is almost impossible to beat and Liverpool could truly benefit by signing him in the ongoing transfer window. More often than not, the club’s spectacular attack has been let down due to some shoddy business at the back. Of late, the defenders have put in decent displays and Van Dijk has also been effective enough but the lack of a solid presence in goal is continuing to cost them points and they cannot afford to drop points at a time as crucial as this.

At present, they are occupying the 4th place in the league standings and are 3 points behind Chelsea. To progress further and end the season on a strong note, Liverpool will need to tighten their displays at the back. Based on what we have seen this season, Karius and Mignolet are not good enough to do that and hence, moving for a player like Becker seems like the need of the hour for Klopp.

However, luring him from Roma might prove to be quite an ordeal since latest reports suggest that they have rejected a second bid from the Merseyside club. The Serie A club are holding out for £44m. Regardless, this is a player Liverpool must risk going all out for and it will be interesting to see if they can sign him before the window comes to an end.
