Why Manchester United Are Right In Splashing The Cash On Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
According to the Sun, Manchester United have agreed a £80m fee with Lazio for the transfer for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as Jose Mourinho is set to make the midfielder his first mega-signing of the summer.
The 23-year-old has earned rave reviews for his displays in the Serie A as he has been Lazio’s star midfielder this season. He joined the Serie A club from Belgian side Genk three years ago but has been stellar this season after a decent campaign last term.
With Michael Carrick hanging up his boots at the end of the season and Marouane Fellaini yet to extend his contract at United, Mourinho is in dire need of a top midfielder and Milinkovic-Savic fits the bill perfectly. He is just 23 but has shown a lot of maturity, giving balance to the Lazio side with his combative displays in midfield.
Milinković-Savić is, in many aspects, the complete midfielder. Under current manager Simeone Inazghi, the Serbian has developed his game leaps and bounds, improving his discipline, decision-making and technique. In very little time, he has become the heartbeat of the Serie A side.
At almost 6ft 4in, the 23-year-old has all the physical attributes to dominate the midfield. With brute force and power, Milinkovic-Savic is a handful for the defenders and a constant threat in the air, while his dynamism and versatility could realistically see him thrive in the Premier League.
Despite possessing a burly figure, the midfielder has the finesse and control to flourish in the space behind the striker. He can soak up the pressure and make use of his strength to wrestle past players with utmost ease. The Serb can mix his game up and has the capacity to dominate the midfield.
One thing which will appeal significantly to Mourinho is Milinkovic-Savic’s ability to slot seamlessly into several different formations. The 23-year-old is adept in various midfield roles, in both defensive and attacking phases of play. The former Genk man can play as a defensive midfielder or as an attacking midfielder but he thrives better behind the striker. Not to forget, he is a goal-scoring midfielder, who has netted 13 this campaign for Lazio.
Milinkovic-Savic is one of the hottest midfield prospects and has every tool to become a world-class midfielder. His versatility adds more to his value, which at United will help star midfielder Paul Pogba to thrive more. A midfield three consisting of Nemanja Matic, Pogba and Milinkovic-Savic would be brilliant as Mourinho aims to challenge Manchester City for the title next season.
Pogba has blown hot and cold and despite the arrival of Matic last summer, the Frenchman is yet to deliver the goods on a consistent basis. Signing Milinkovic-Savic makes complete sense as the 23-year-old will provide freedom and license for Pogba to thrive in a more attacking role.
That said, Mourinho must acquire the services of Milinkovic-Savic at the end of the season as the Lazio midfielder will be worth every penny United spend on him. He is one of the exciting prospects in Europe and would surely help Pogba to play at his best from next season.
