Top 3 Underrated Centre-backs West Ham Should Look To Sign In The January Window

The East London club is going through a period of severe torment after losing their manager Slaven Bilic as a result of the defeat to Liverpool at the London stadium earlier this month.

The Croatian manager was on the fringes of sacking before they faced the Merseyside club. But the 4-1 defeat was the final nail in the coffin for Bilic’s West Ham career.

One thing that was clearly noticeable was the fragile defence of the Hammers. Perhaps even worse than that of Liverpool’s, who have been awful at the back this season. West Ham United may have brought David Moyes to replace Slaven Bilic, but that doesn’t change the state of their defence.

The Scottish manager should really consider bringing in some quality defenders in the January window to strengthen the defence. Here are three centre-backs who could help them get better results over the course of the season.

Dejan Lovren

This might be disputable, but the Croatian centre-back is not as bad as what most Liverpool fans claim him to be. He’s just going through a rough patch in his career. Despite his lacklustre performances in recent times, Jurgen Klopp has still backed the 28-year-old as the club’s first choice centre-back.

However, the damage might have gone beyond repair for Lovren at Liverpool. West Ham could be an ideal destination for the Croatian international.

Eliaquim Mangala

The Frenchman has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester City after the arrival Pep Guardiola last season. After a season-long spell at Valencia last season, the 26-year-old returned to Manchester City only to warm the bench.

Crystal Palace were close to signing the Frenchman in the summer but Mangala rejected the offer to stay and fight for his place at the club. But with John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi excelling, the Frenchman can’t seem to find a place in the first team.

His £32m move from FC Porto to the Etihad has been a disaster for the player as well as the club but Mangala’s quality still remains intact and West Ham should make the most of it by signing him in January.

Dan Burn

The 25-year-old Wigan Athletic centre-back is one of the most talented defenders in the Championship. Standing at 6’7, Burn is also one of the tallest defenders playing in England. He can be a real threat from set pieces for the Hammers. He’s also young and has plenty of time to develop into a top-class defender under Moyes.
