Wolves Must Sign These 2 Strikers In The Summer
Wolves have struggled for large parts of this season and like most teams in their predicament, their issue has been scoring goals.
On paper they don’t necessarily struggle; Helder Costa is an outstanding young player and Andreas Weimann has done it at the highest level and is still only 25. However, the reality is that, for various reasons, these players didn’t provide the sheer number of goals needed to bring success at this level.
In the case of Costa, he is definitely a player who would go places. In fact, that may well be the problem! Should Costa leave at any point then Wolves would be losing a great attacking talent. Even so, most of his good work is done in deeper or wider areas. So even though 10 goals in 35 games is not a bad return, it’s not the same as having a prolific striker up front.
Weimann’s is a different scenario. He really should be too good for this level and still be improving at this age. However, just 2 goals in 24 Championship games tells a different story. He didn’t manage a goal in 14 attempts for Austria either. In mitigation, he is probably more comfortable in wider areas and wouldn’t imagine himself as the long-term solution at No.9.
It’s sometimes a smart move to look to the next league down to find a cheap source of talent, while others take Premier League rejects as a way of bringing guaranteed experience. In Wolves’ case, bringing players from the top division can be dangerous as it shows to some degree that they are regressing.
As for League One, there is no guarantee that those players would be good enough and if Wolves’ wish to be promoted, they can’t take that risk. The money they shelled out on Costa is the proof that they don’t mind spending. And so, the two players mentioned below may be the solid and realistic targets who could improve the squad.
Lasse Vibe
Although he’s 30-years-old now, the Dane remains a solid goal scorer at this level. He is consistent too, netting 14 in the league for Brentford last season and another 12 so far this season.
Having passed 100 league goals in Denmark, Sweden, and England, Vibe is an experienced goal-getter, the type of player teams continue to underestimate.
Kenneth Zohore
He may cost a little more but the 23-year-old attacker, also from Denmark, is improving in bundles now at Cardiff and would be a great buy. His and Vibe’s paths actually crossed at Gothenburg in 2014, though back then, Zohore was the up-and-coming youngster and Vibe was busy netting 25 goals.
Zohore is arguably the better player now and having reached double-figures for the first time this season, he is one player who is definitely on the up.
