Why should West Ham sign Victor Wanyama this January

West Ham made a number of good signings in the summer, especially with the addition of Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez to improve the midfield. However, both these players are injured and the Hammers are finding it tough to replace them with comparable quality players.

After the red card against Leicester City that will keep him out of three games, captain Mark Noble has left a huge hole for Manuel Pellegrini to fill in the upcoming games. Declan Rice remains to be the only fit midfielder in the squad who can play first-team football with Pedro Obiang also sustaining a knock.

Hence, it is pretty clear that West Ham are not getting any luck in terms of injuries. That being said, they should look for a combative midfield option in January. And Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama could be a solid option for the East London club. Here’s why:

Wanyama can be a decent addition

Wanyama had a knee problem which kept him out of action from late July to the first week of September. But since then, the Kenyan has been fully fit. However, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino isn’t selecting him for league games. He has only made three appearances from the bench this season, having only featured 18 times last year (10 from the bench).

The lack of playing time is partly due to the injury concerns of the player, which probably prompted Pochettino to think he is not fit enough to play the high-intensity game. However, the 27-year-old is back now and raring to go.

Maybe, January could be the right time for West Ham to make an offer for him. Wanyama is a quality defensive midfielder who possesses the physicality and defensive awareness to perform that role with perfection. His authoritative nature helps him dominate the opposition’s forward players and act as a proper shield for the back line.

The Hammers have Declan Rice performing that role but the youngster needs support. In Wanyama, he would get an ideal partner and together they can be a pugnacious duo thwarting all the dangers away.

Verdict

Tottenham are unable to use the Kenyan because of his dodgy fitness and the fact that their high-intensity game could be too much for him. Hence, it makes sense from their point of view to offload the player.

However, in any case, West Ham should look to buy the 27-year-old in the upcoming winter transfer window.
