Go for it Poch – Tottenham signing this €30m Serie A starlet would be a brilliant move

Why Tottenham must make a January swoop for Lorenzo Pellegrini

As per a January report from the Daily Mirror, Roma midfield ace Lorenzo Pellegrini attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City. However, AS Roma were reluctant to sell the 22-year-old midway through last season and kept hold of their star in the summer too, when Manchester United revived their interest.

Lorenzo Pellegrini, 22, has started the season well, scoring a goal and has supplied two assists in six Serie A games. With the Italian performing well for Roma, should Tottenham Hotspur make a move for him in January? Definitely.

First of all, Tottenham Hotspur didn’t sign a single player in the summer transfer window, which has left Mauricio Pochettino to work with the same squad that finished fourth last season. Pochettino clearly should add a couple of players in January to mount a significant top-four challenge this season.

One area Spurs must prioritise strengthening in January is the midfield. Mousa Dembele’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season. The Belgian’s body has moaned and groaned over the past eight seasons in English football and the 31-year-old has also had his injury problems in recent years.

Dembele has been the muscle of Spurs’ engine room over the years due to his aggressive ball-winning abilities and crisp passing. However, the Belgian in the final year of his contract has shown signs of slowing down. Hence, Pochettino must target a box-to-box midfielder in January.

In that case, Lorenzo Pellegrini would fit the profile of a box-to-box midfielder to give the team a more dynamic approach in the middle of the park.

Pellegrini came through the ranks at Roma and spent a two-year spell at Serie A side Sassuolo to gain first-team experience. A technically gifted, two-footed central midfielder, the 22-year-old has a wide range of passing abilities. He is a fantastic dribbler and is also capable of delivering dangerous crosses in the box.

The Italy international is very good at making interceptions, shooting from long range and picking out a pass. Creative with the ball at his feet, the 22-year-old can dictate the tempo of the game.

With his technique, the range of passing and remarkable vision, Pellegrini fits the bill of a deep-lying playmaker. Displaying both power and poise in the middle of the park, Pellegrini is the latest in a long line of gifted Italian players.

As per Football Italia, Pellegrini has a €30m exit clause, which Spurs are certainly capable of paying. The 22-year-old could be a masterstroke signing for Pochettino if he can lure him to north London in January.

He would be a fantastic long-term investment and a potential Dembele replacement as well.
