Go for it Rafa – This £30m speed demon could be a brilliant signing for Newcastle United

Why Andros Townsend will be a good signing for Newcastle United

Newcastle United enjoyed an impressive return to the Premier League under Rafa Benitez. The Magpies finished 10th, ending their season in style in a 3-0 win against Chelsea at St.James’ Park. Benitez’s men were solid in defence and they were creative while attacking.

Now, however, Benitez must improve the squad ahead of the new season. Newcastle should certainly bring in a few new faces if they want to establish themselves as Premier League regulars. They have been linked with a move for Andros Townsend, who currently plays for Crystal Palace.

Palace have already rejected Newcastle’s initial offer of £20million for the former Tottenham Hotspur player and they’re demanding £30m.

According to reports, Palace manager Roy Hodgson must sell some of his men before he can make any further additions to the squad. The Main Stand at Selhurst Park is set to be renovated and Palace must partly finance that infrastructure project by reducing costs elsewhere.

Townsend made a total of 36 appearances last season, scoring 2 goals and providing 7 assists in that time. He is a versatile player who is capable of playing in all three positions in the midfield. Townsend loves to cut in from the wing and take on defenders.

His dribbling ability is excellent and he possesses the pace for it as well. Last season, Townsend averaged 2.3 successful dribbles per game. His raids down the wing were a handful for most defenders.

Townsend has also the ability to send dangerous crosses into the box. The midfielder is capable of taking long-range shots and he has all the qualities to fit perfectly into the Newcastle system. The likes of Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez will thrive off his supply.

Having been a part of Newcastle before, Townsend might be tempted to link up with Benitez once more. A move back to his former club could see the winger display better form under a manager he has previously worked with.

Newcastle United are on an upsurge and they should sign Townsend to stay on top. His price tag will be a tad higher but it will be a shrewd move from the Magpies.
