Newcastle United 0-0 Fulham: Cottagers claim a valuable away point
Fulham held Newcastle United to a 0-0 draw in a cagey Premier League affair at St.James’ Park in a matchweek just prior to the boxing day. The hosts had a lion’s share of possession and created more chances in front of the goal but couldn’t convert them. The visitors also had a couple of pops at goal but Martin Dubravka wasn’t tested to the maximum.
The Magpies had a chance in the first half through captain Jamaal Lascelles, when his header bounced dangerously across the face of the goal after taking a deflection off Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. However, there was no one there in the black and white strip to tap the ball home.
Mitrovic forced Dubravka to a routine save but the opening half petered out without much promise. Newcastle built some pressure after the break though and had a penalty shout. Kenedy’s arm appeared to be tugged back by Joe Bryan but the referee waved away the appeals.
Fabian Schar went close with a header before Mitrovic’s shot was blocked by Lascelles. There were suggestions of handball from the Newcastle captain but it didn’t look deliberate. At the end of the day, a point apiece seems like a fair reflection of how the game went.
Newcastle stay at 15th position in the table with 17 points, five ahead of the danger zone. Meanwhile, Fulham stay at the bottom of the table, still four points adrift of safety. However, it was a good point away from home for them, along with a clean sheet.
Here’s how their fans reacted on social media after this result:
Never start Schurrle again, Kamara is so much better

Great result. I think a clean sheet was probably more important for the confidence then a win. Down side of the results for Southampton and Palace, could have done with a draw and a loss.
