In a shocking revelation, French international Morgan Schneiderlin has now revealed that his Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney did not know who Anthony Martial was, when a deal for the 19-year-old forward was on the verge of being completed. The youngster was allowed to leave the French national side by boss Didier Deschamps on Monday to travel to England and finalize a deal with the Red Devils.
The Red Devils will be paying around €80m and it should be confirmed by the Premier League giants, before the English transfer window closes on Tuesday. The deal shocked many as Martial has barely played less than 50 Ligue 1 matches for Monaco and the former Southampton man has now revealed that Rooney asked him about his potential new strike partner.
He told reporters at France’s training base at Clairefontaine, “To be honest, yesterday [Sunday] on the plane, Wayne Rooney came to speak to me and asked me who Martial was, because the English press had started to speak. I told him he’s a great player with great potential, who has played some good matches with Monaco last season and the beginning of this. I told him he is technical and powerful. A little like Thierry Henry, even if it’s the press who are making that comparison. The size of the fee? If he wants my advice, it is to ignore it. The media will talk a lot and will expect him to score many goals. But he must remember his qualities and play like he knows how. He can’t be paralysed by it. I think everything will go well.“
