Watford 1-1 Newcastle: Magpies drop points away from home
Newcastle United were denied a win late on by Watford in a game that ended 1-1 at the Vicarage Road this afternoon. Salomon Rondon gave the away side a precious lead but substitute Abdoulaye Doucoure equalised eight minutes from time to share the spoils in Hertfordshire.
The Magpies led in the 29th minute when a Matt Ritchie cross found Rondon’s run in the box, the latter was the favourite to win his header and score, and he did exactly that. The Venezuelan had other chances to score as well but was twice ruled out offside.
Watford manager Javi Gracia made six changes to the line-up and it showed at times. The Hornets struggled to create goal-scoring chances on a regular basis. The gaffer then had no choice but to bring on Troy Deeney and Doucoure after the break to change things.
The latter netted the equaliser eight minutes from time after Gerard Deulofeu’s cross from the right-wing was perfect for the scorer. The home side created more moments in the second half, but Newcastle were resolute defensively.
Rafa Benitez’s men had almost every behind the ball except striker Rondon. As a result of that, they only conceded one goal in this game and came away with a valuable point. This draw keeps the Magpies in 15th position in the table, four points clear of the danger zone. Watford are ninth in the standings with 28 points from 20 games played.
Here’s how the Newcastle fans reacted on Twitter after this game.
Players gave it their all I can’t complain but I’m just disappointed in the way we conceded.

Not the ideal result given our next few fixtures but I point is better than nothing. Gotta start winning soon though

Sloppy defending for the goal. But overall that was a determined effort. Any point away from home is a good point.
