Dream Everton XI featuring Lucas Digne, Richarlison and Marcos Rojo
Everton were one of the biggest spenders last summer, following the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United. Ronald Koeman, the then Toffees boss, roped in a string of new faces who failed miserably to perform.
A disastrous inception of the 2017/18 season resulted in the Dutchman’s dismissal. Veteran Sam Allardyce, his successor, helped the Merseysiders finish 8th in the Premier League but the negative brand of football caused a frenzy of rage among the supporters, which eventually led to a season-end exit.
The appointment of Marco Silva, however, is an ambitious move but the young Portuguese gaffer had a tough few weeks following successive defeats in pre-season friendlies. However, the Toffees have made some important signings in the ongoing transfer window.
Everton have parted ways with Davy Klaassen, who failed to deliver in his debut campaign. In addition, veteran Wayne Rooney has been offloaded to MLS side DC United. Ramiro Funes Mori is another significant egress who left for Villarreal but these departures have now been compensated by a couple of impressive inclusions.
An ageing Leighton Baines has been a great servant for the Toffees but his ever-growing injury concerns seem to have forced the manager to find a long-term successor in Digne.
Richarlison, on the other hand, will offer quality down the left flank, allowing Gylfi Sigurdsson to operate centrally which could create more opportunities for No.9 Cenk Tosun. Theo Walcott must occupy the opposite flank and the availability of Yannick Bolasie, Nikola Vlasic, Oumar Niasse as well as Dominic Calvert-Lewin should provide some much-needed quality as well as bench strength.
They also have options in the middle of the park with Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin likely to feature in their usual deep midfield roles. Jordan Pickford, the young Three Lions custodian, enjoyed a scintillating World Cup run and he must replicate his form for Everton as well.
Seamus Coleman is a prized resource, who must aim to trouble defensive lines with his overlapping runs. However, the Toffees still need reinforcements in the centre-back slot.
Michael Keane must improve his game whereas veteran Phil Jagielka, in his mid-thirties, should be succeeded by a worthy alternative. As per a report from Liverpool Echo, Everton are interested in a move for Barcelona prodigy Yerry Mina. However, the same report has claimed that the Toffees are also interested in signing Manchester United outcast Marcos Rojo, who is valued at around £30m.
The Argentina international could partner Keane in the heart of the defence and the regrouped Everton should launch a challenge for a place in the top-6.
