“Invincible once more”, “Keep going”: Some Celtic fans seem quite happy after easy 2-0 win vs Hibernian + Match report

Celtic 2-0 Hibernian: The Hoops beat Hibs to maintain lead over Rangers

Goals from Ryan Christie and Oliver Burke gave Celtic a comfortable 2-0 victory over Hibernian at Celtic Park on Wednesday.

Brendan Rodgers is yet to taste a domestic defeat at Parkhead this season and his troops ensured the record stayed intact. Hibernian came with a plan to frustrate Celtic by sitting deep and hitting on the counter. The plan failed and how Celtic didn’t score more than two goals remains a mystery.

Rodgers’ Hoops started the game brightly, with Ryan Christie firing wide the first real effort of note. It took a fine reflex block by Ofir Marciano to stop Celtic from going ahead, keeping out Timothy Weah’s shot after he was played through by Callum McGregor.

Hibernian looked comfortable in keeping the hosts quiet but their defence was finally breached in the 24th minute. Right-back Jeremy Toljan, who got his first league start, displayed his attacking capability when he burst into the Hibs box from the right and cut it back for Christie, who smacked home.

The visitors responded well after going 1-0 down but they didn’t quite test Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain. At the other end, Marciano pulled off another fantastic save to keep out Weah.

Celtic dominated possession after the break, with Marciano once again standing tall and making a magnificent point-blank save from Dedryck Boyata’s header. However, the Israeli goalkeeper was undone when Christie turned provider for Burke to deliver a shot which took a looping deflection off Darren McGregor in the 64th minute.

Marc McNulty had a good chance to make it 2-1 for Hibs but sliced over after a slip from Jozo Simunovic. The only blemish for Celtic on the evening was seeing Emilio Izaguirre stretchered off after being caught on the ankle by Hibernian substitute Darnell Johnston.
