Leeds United opinion: The Whites should revive interest in Matej Vydra

The Whites were heavily linked with a move for then Derby County striker Matej Vydra, as Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa looked for reinforcements. However, the move collapsed at the last moment, with the 26-year-old wanting to play Premier League football (Sky Sports).

The Rams were unwilling to spend on a new player unless they could sell Vydra. He eventually got his move to the Premier League with Burnley, taking a leap of faith for a move that has, unfortunately for him, not worked out.

So far, the striker has struggled to make an impact at the club, playing only 15 games. Out of those 15 games, Vydra has started just five games, with only two coming in the Premier League.

Yet, he has managed to contribute to four goals in all competitions, showing that even with limited game-time, the 26-year-old has the goods to contribute to goals. Regular game-time has been difficult to come by, with both Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood ahead of him.

Burnley’s difficult start to the season didn’t help either. For Leeds United, this is an opportunity to re-ignite a move for their former target in the summer.

Leeds need another striker within their ranks, especially if they end up in the Premier League next season. At the moment that looks highly likely, given the fact that they’ve, at the very least, confirmed their place in a playoff spot.

Marcelo Bielsa’s first target was Matej Vydra but the Argentine had to settle for Patrick Bamford. The former Middlesbrough man has struggled. While he has stepped up in recent weeks, Bamford has failed to consistently find himself in the starting XI.

This has affected the club and while Kemar Roofe has stepped up, he needs backup. Matej Vydra is the perfect man to step into the fold, thanks to his blistering pace and agility.

It was on show last season, with him scoring 21 goals and providing 4 assists, his career best since his first season with Watford. The 26-year-old would also add pace and directness to Leeds.

The fact that he can play out wide or as a second-striker will prove to be a great asset for the club.
