Leeds United snapping up this 24-year-old Swiss hitman would be a terrific move by Bielsa

Leeds United Opinion: Why Bielsa should make a move for Michael Frey

According to a report from Inside Futbol, Leeds United are keen on signing Fernebache striker Michael Frey, whilst facing competition from fellow Championship side Middlesbrough. (h/t Inside Futbol)

The Swiss striker made a great impression with the Turkish outfit in his first season with some eye-catching performances. In the process, the 24-year-old racked up 5 goals and 2 assists, though he appeared as a substitute for more than 10 games.

Prior to his Turkey switch, Frey was exceptional in his only season with Zurich, bagging a total of  16 goals and six assists in all competitions.

A youth product of Young Boys, Frey played more than 100 games for the first-team, with a goal and assists tally of 57. He has also had his spells with Ligue 1 outfit Lille and FC Luzern.

Leeds need to strengthen their attack

Elsewhere, the Whites are poised for a great season after a disappointing Championship last term, which saw them losing out a well-placed promotion chance.

One of the major let downs for Marcelo Bielsa was in the attacking department, failing to pull the strings in the crucial stage of the Championship.

The Argentine’s preferred striker Kemar Roofe dealt with an injury blow midway through the season, which reflected on the entire side’s result. Patrick Bamford was also found off-colour, as he failed to step up in the absence of Roofe, who is now also linked with a move away from Elland Road.

Given that, the Whites can make better use of the Swiss attacker Frey, who has shown his ability with all the clubs he has ever played before. Furthermore, Frey can also reinstate his career under Bielsa, one of the influential managers of his generation, who has forged so many talents before.

Despite playing as a pure striker last season at Zurich, Frey also learnt to play as a second-striker and even as a winger. He is known for his deadly finishing techniques and he often uses his physicality to good effect.

Final Verdict

Leeds should prioritize the attacking options in order to make a statement in the forthcoming season. Frey would be a brilliant signing, given his potential and the success he had with every club he has represented so far in his career.
