Leicester City should sign this 6ft 4in Mexican beast to strengthen their ageing defence – agreed?

Leicester City opinion: Should Leicester sign Cesar Montes?

Leicester City announced the signing of Brendan Rodgers as their new manager this week after the club parted ways with Claude Puel. The former Liverpool boss will look to change things around at the King Power and defensive recruitments are a must in the summer.

Centre-back duo of Wes Morgan and Jonny Evans are both into their 30’s with the former’s contract running out in the summer. This leaves Leicester with just Harry Maguire and young Caglar Soyuncu in central defence. Brendan Rodgers should make a move for Monterrey’s defensive rock Cesar Fontes.

The 22-year-old is touted to be the next big thing in Mexican football after a string of magnificent performances for the club. Having made his debut as an 18-year old, Montes played 33 times for Los Rayados in his first season.

The young Mexican has been a mainstay in central defence since his debut and has made over 100 appearances for Monterrey in the league so far. His performances have caught the eye of many and a move to a tougher league would be the next big step in his career.

Standing at 6ft 4in, Montes is a towering centre-half who is dominant in every defensive duel. Despite his build, Montes is extremely mobile and incredibly comfortable on the ball.

The youngster can be compared to Mats Hummels and Leonardo Bonucci, thanks to his vision on the ball. Montes has displayed his passing prowess time and again and is capable of picking out a forward through a killer pass.

Another incredibly important trait is Montes’ tackling ability. Montes has, on numerous occasions, proven this brilliant ability to win the ball back legally in dangerous positions, something that will be of massive importance in the Premier League.

At 6ft 4in, his ability in the air is obvious and is a massive threat in set-piece situations. Although there is room for improvement with his heading accuracy, his mere presence in the box is enough to cause havoc in the opposition box.

Above everything else, Montes’ maturity since his debut at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer has been noteworthy and his leadership in the box will be of massive help to any team he ends up in.

Conclusion

Given Leicester’s ageing defence, Brendan Rodgers should seriously consider the option of bringing the Mexican to the King Power in the summer. Montes will improve massively in the Premier League and if given the opportunity, he should make the move to England without any hesitation.
