Leicester City signing this 26-year-old Bundesliga ace in January would be wise amidst Chilwell’s uncertain future

Why Leicester City should make a move for Jerome Roussillon in January

According to a report from the Sun, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has identified Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell as his first signing when the Blues’ transfer ban ends.

Ben Chilwell, 22, is one of the most coveted left-backs in the Premier League, attracting interest from Manchester City earlier this summer. Frank Lampard too is a massive fan of the England international and has been keeping a close eye on his progress.

The report claims Chilwell is valued at £70million and Lampard wants to sign the 22-year-old as Chelsea’s new long-term left-back. Chelsea were unable to sign any new players in the summer as they were handed a two-window transfer ban.

Realistically, the transfer ban will not expire until next summer, but if the Blues do go ahead with another appeal, it could be lifted in January.

As for Leicester City, they lost one of their best players, Harry Maguire to Manchester United in the summer.

The Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers opted against bringing in a replacement for Maguire, trusting the highly-rated Caglar Soyuncu to fill the void left by the England international. And going by the first few weeks of the new season, the gamble is paying off.

However, Rodgers will need to be careful with Chilwell and try his level best to hold on to his first-choice left-back.

Chilwell’s star is on the rise and is rightly tracked by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City. So, if Chelsea or any other club come up with a mammoth offer in January, it would be difficult for Leicester to hold on to one of their stars.

Should the Foxes agree to sell Chilwell in the next transfer window, Rodgers should replace the Englishman will Wolfsburg’s Jerome Roussillon, who was heavily linked with a switch to the King Power Stadium last summer.

Jerome Roussillon, 26, joined Wolfsburg from Montpellier last summer and enjoyed a solid debut campaign in the Bundesliga, contributing with three goals and six assists in 28 Bundesliga games.

He has started the new campaign well, managing a goal and an assist in three games across all competitions.

In terms of his attributes, the Frenchman has impressed in the Bundesliga, bombarding up and down the left hand flank for his side, and his athleticism and stamina levels would certainly offer Leicester something extra, both defensively and offensively.

He is a complete left-back and is equally comfortable playing as a wing-back, giving his coach the tactical versatility in defence.

Verdict

Roussillon’s all-round traits in both defence and attack will certainly enhance the overall quality of the Leicester City side. All in all, the Sarcelles-born star could be the ideal replacement for Chilwell at the King Power Stadium, and hence, Rodgers shouldn’t hesitate to make a move for the Frenchman in January if his current left-back leaves.
