Leicester City opinion: Should the Foxes sign Youri Tielemans?
According to reports from British news outlet the Telegraph, Leicester City have submitted a bid for Monaco star Youri Tielemans. The young midfielder made a sensational impact during his six-month loan spell at the club and has since become the club’s top target.
That is just the way things should be and given the project that Brendan Rodgers is creating, they need someone like Tielemans. Barely 22 years old, Tielemans has always been an exceptional talent for both Anderlecht and even Monaco despite his struggles in the Ligue 1.
An incredibly talented midfielder, the 22-year-old has the talent to play either as a number 10 or as a central midfielder, which is where he flourishes. Creative, good on the ball and very intelligent, Tielemans is more than good enough to play for most of Europe’s top sides.
But instead, the young Belgian opted to move to Monaco, which was the perfect move for his career and one that would help him improve even more. However, given Monaco’s struggles this season, it’s no surprise that Tielemans’ also struggled and that lead to the move to Leicester City.
It’s here with the Foxes that the young midfielder really showed what he could at his best, with his energy and creativity flourishing under both Claude Puel and new boss Brendan Rodgers. A tough central-midfielder, Tielemans has averaged a rather surprising 1.3 tackles and 0.9 interceptions per game.
That is over and above his 1.2 key passes, 2.4 shots, 85% passing accuracy and an average of nearly 50 passes per game. More than anything, the statistics show just how all-round the 22-year-old is and why he’s perfect for Leicester City.
Ever since both N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater left in consecutive seasons, the Foxes have failed to add a proper central-midfielder.
Sure, Wilfred N’didi has effectively replaced Kante but nobody has replaced Drinkwater, who despite his struggles at Chelsea was absolutely brilliant at Leicester City.
His drive, energy and composure proved to be the perfect yin to Kante’s yang during their title winning run. It’s what Youri Tielemans will effectively replace and the Belgian will do an even better job at that, which says a lot about both his ability and talent.
