Liverpool beating Man United to win this £15m race for Championship sensation would solve a key problem for Klopp

Liverpool opinion: Should the Reds sign Ben Godfrey?

According to a report from the Sun, Liverpool have joined Arsenal and Manchester United in the race to sign Norwich’s Ben Godfrey. The report reveals that Lyon and RB Leipzig are also interested in the 21-year-old defender who is valued at £15million.

Godfrey’s performances at the back have helped Norwich to the top of the Championship table so far and with just two games left, automatic promotion to the Premier League is all but confirmed.

However, the Canaries would have to do incredibly well to keep hold of their young defender, especially with the clubs interested in him capable of offering more in terms of both top-level football and wages.

One club who should make an attempt to sign Godfrey is Liverpool. The Reds are having a phenomenal season in both the Premier League and the Champions League and if things go their way, they could well end up with the double by the end of this campaign.

Liverpool have lost just one game in the Premier League all season and the biggest reason behind their success has been their defence. Virgil van Dijk has changed Liverpool’s fate at the back and Alisson’s addition last summer has arguably been the signing of the season.

Joel Matip has played his part next to van Dijk but the main issue that Liverpool will face next season is with their back up centre-half. Dejan Lovren has been prone to mistakes and Joe Gomez’s injury issues make him unreliable for the whole campaign.

The addition of Ben Godfrey will solve that problem and the 21-year-old could potentially challenge Joel Matip for a spot in the starting eleven. Godfrey has been immense for the Canaries in the second half of the season after barely being used until the end of November.

The youngster is a calm and composed figure on the ball, who despite only being 6 feet tall, has been very impressive in the air. Godfrey is hugely versatile and has been used as a number 6 and also at left-back this season, which could be a huge asset to the Reds next season.

Liverpool will need a backup left-back next season when Alberto Moreno leaves the club in the summer and signing Godfrey could give them the best of both worlds. His ability to feature on the left will surely ease the pressure on Robertson, who has been a revelation this season.

Conclusion

Ben Godfrey has been one of the best defenders in the Championship this season and signing him in the summer would take Liverpool’s outstanding defence to the next level.

Godfrey will also develop massively under a manager like Jurgen Klopp, who has worked wonders with another young English defender in Alexander-Arnold.

Godfrey could have the same impact as the teenager has had over the course of this season and he should choose the Reds among his other suitors.
