Former English professional footballer and football pundit Tony Cottee has emphasized the importance of Liverpool signing Virgil Van Dijk. The Southampton centre back is considered as one of the best defenders in the Premier League and Cottee feels that the towering presence of a defender is what Jurgen Klopp’s side are lacking and they should outspend their rivals in the transfer window.

Van Dijk has already been linked with a transfer to Manchester City and Chelsea, with the latter reportedly ready to pay £60million to land the Dutchman. But Cottee thinks the Reds – who have conceded 23 Premier League goals this season – need to get to the front of the queue for Van Dijk as they need a stronger back four to push for the title.

Cottee stated, “I think a centre-half like Van Dijk – if they can get him – will be a huge signing for Liverpool. They do need more strength in depth”.

Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan have all been shaky for Liverpool, but have managed to stabilize the defense compared to what it was last term despite leaking goals. However, Cottee feels the signing of the 6ft 3inch Dutchman can assure Liverpool success.

“The way they play, it leads to them needing a strong back four and two strong centre-halves. If you’re going to play a pressing game and push forward, which is what he wants, he needs reliable defenders. They’re not far away but he’s not quite got it right yet” said the former English striker.

Despite Saints’ chiefs insist Van Dijk is going nowhere in January – especially given his defensive partner Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request, Southampton have slapped a £60million price tag on the 25 year old former Celtic man.

“Whichever club signs him will be getting a machine who can help to sustain a title challenge.” explained Cottee.

Van Dijk has played 27 games this season and has also chipped in with 4 goals.
