Liverpool must not hesitate to splash the cash for this €40m-rated Spanish defender starring in Portugal

Why Liverpool must make a move for Alex Grimaldo

Andy Robertson could be the best left-back in the Premier League. The Scot wasn’t the most expensive signing when he joined from Hull City and he took time to get used to Jurgen Klopp’s style.

The left-back was second fiddle to James Milner initially but he has taken over that role from the Englishman and is possibly one of the most consistent players in the Liverpool team.

The Reds will find it hard to find someone who is better than the Scot, but they do not have a recognised senior left-back in the team.

Alberto Moreno was allowed to leave on a free in the summer and the Reds should reignite their interest in Alex Grimaldo.

Calciomercato claimed that Liverpool could have signed the 23-year-old last season for nothing less than €40million.

The Spaniard joined the Portuguese side from Barcelona and seems to be a left-back that will fit into Liverpool’s plans.

Competition for Robertson

Although there should be no complaints of Robertson’s efforts and performances, the Scot still needs quality competition to get even better.

Liverpool have young left-backs in Adam Lewis and Yasser Larouci but they won’t be playing in the first-team anytime soon.

The Reds cannot rely on Milner or Joe Gomez throughout the season as the pair are not natural left-backs.

Alejandro Grimaldo

Grimaldo scored four goals and provided 12 assists in the Portuguese league last season and is one of the most attack-minded left-backs in the game.

The Reds cannot expect Robertson to play every game this season, and they could do with Grimaldo joining in the winter window.

Liverpool didn’t spend big in the summer and should have the transfer kitty to land one or two big names.

Robertson is one of the most durable players in the Premier League but there is no harm in having quality cover for the Scot.

Verdict

Grimaldo might not be playing in a fancy league but the Spaniard will be a great addition to Liverpool.

The left-back has the potential to improve further and under Klopp, there should be a major improvement in his game.
