Liverpool revisiting a move to sign this searing German left-back would make all the difference for them

Why Liverpool should make a move for Philipp Max in January

Liverpool have been at their sublime best at the start of the new Premier League season.

The Reds have won all four of their matches before the international break. That has seen them bag wins against Norwich City, Southampton, Arsenal and Burnley to leave Jurgen Klopp’s side top of the table.

After winning the Champions League last season and coming mightily close to breaking their Premier League title drought, Klopp was expected to spend big in the summer transfer window.

Surprisingly, Liverpool had a very quiet transfer window with goalkeeper Adrian the most significant name arriving at Anfield.

As far as the departures are concerned, the Reds sold Danny Ings, Simon Mignolet and Ryan Kent, whilst releasing Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno. The exit of Moreno has left Andrew Robertson with no real cover at left-back.

Robertson has been magnificent for the Reds since making his way into the first-team, with his contributions to the club’s Champions League triumph nothing less than miraculous.

The Scotland international racked up an incredible assist tally of 13 in all competitions last term. However, Klopp is certainly going to need another left-back to offer support and competition to Robertson through the course of the season.

That being said, Liverpool must make a move for Augsburg’s Philipp Max, who was interestingly linked with a move to Anfield in the summer transfer window.

Philipp Max, 25, was with Bayern Munich’s academy before joining Schalke, where he made the step up to the professional game before leaving in 2014 for Karlsruher FC. He made an immediate return to the top-flight with Augsburg in 2015 and managed to nail down a regular starting role at his new club.

The German defender has been a regular fixture for Augsburg since then. He contributed with four goals and seven assists in 34 appearances in all competitions, as Augsburg somehow managed to retain their top-flight status. Nevertheless, Philipp Max could be tempted to join Liverpool if they come up with an offer in January.

One of the most dangerous attacking full-backs in the Bundesliga, Max is also adept playing at left wing-back or in an advanced role on the left, and that kind of versatility will undoubtedly appeal to Klopp. He has pace and power in abundance, with the ability to get forward and deliver teasing crosses into the box.

The 25-year-old is an energetic presence on the left flank and despite being attack-minded, he is also defensively sharp.

Moreover, the German is a proven set-piece specialist and has a knack for finding the net from direct free-kicks. A good reader of the game and a tenacious tackler as well, Max would provide great competition for Robertson at Liverpool.

Verdict

Thus, Liverpool must not hesitate to reignite their interest and go all out for Max when the transfer window reopens in January.
