Liverpool signing this 14-goal Russian league star would help them beat Man City to the league title this season

Why Sardar Azmoun would be a superb signing for Klopp’s Liverpool

According to a report from the Metro, Liverpool have been scouting Zenit Saint Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun.

The Iran international, 24, moved to Zenit from Rubin Kazan on February 1 this year and scored 14 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions, firing his new club to the Russian Premier League title.

He has started the new season very well, bagging two goals and an assist in four Russian Premier League games.

Sardar Azmoun has played well in the Russian leagues and has also won plaudits on the international stage. Although he retired from international football last year after facing harsh criticism from fans after Iran failed to qualify from the World Cup group stage, he has since returned to the national team.

Considering the special talent the Iranian is, Liverpool must go all out to sign him this summer. The Reds pushed Manchester City all the way last season but still finished second despite amassing 97 points across a hugely impressive campaign.

The addition of goalkeeper Adrian on a free transfer last week was Jurgen Klopp’s third summer signing, following the capture of 17-year-old Sepp van den Berg and 16-year-old midfielder Harvey Elliott.

However, Liverpool need a versatile forward to replace the departed Daniel Sturridge and also challenge the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, as Klopp aims to push Manchester City again for the title and make a deep Champions League run. Thus, signing a player of Sardar Azmoun’s quality could make a lot of difference.

Azmoun is an excellent striker, noted for his pace, dribbling skills and fearsome leap. The Iranian forward possesses a strong all-round game with aerial and technical ability as well as agility and strength.

He can run the channels and link up play very well in and around the box. The 24-year-old, aside from his preferred number nine role, can feature as a wide-attacker as well as a secondary striker.

If Klopp manages to land Azmoun, the former FC Rostov star will have the license to drop deeper and take part in the creative build-up, making Liverpool much more compact and efficient. He could be the ideal player to compete with Firmino and Origi for the no.9 role in Klopp’s starting XI.

Verdict

Only 24, Azmoun will be coming into his best years and could learn a lot from Liverpool’s famed front-three. The ‘Iranian Messi’ could be the perfect signing for the Reds as they look to finally clinch a Premier League title next season.
