Liverpool opinion: Should the Reds win the race for Ibrahima Konate?
Liverpool need reinforcements. If this season proved anything, it’s the fact that the Reds do not have the depth that Manchester City can afford. That’s where they struggled in the end, with injuries across the board affecting their Premier League season.
Losing Joe Gomez hurt them, along with Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson amongst others. It hurt them more than they expected and while the Reds only had one loss, the number of draws kept piling up.
That eventually meant that the club lost the league title by just one point, taking their title drought to 30 years.
This is something that should have never happened but there are a lot of positives to take from this for Jurgen Klopp and his men as they made the Champions League final in consecutive season.
But they do need reinforcements in defence, midfield and attack but they don’t have to world record moves. Instead, it can be bargain signings or players who are yet to hit their peak, which is why links to Samuel Chukwueze have appeared and now even Ibrahima Konate.
Both players are class acts but it’s Konate the club needs more than Chukwueze. The Daily Star has reported that Liverpool and Arsenal are very keen on a move for the 19-year-old RB Leipzig star. The Bundesliga club specialises in young superstars.
The likes of Timo Werner, Naby Keita and even Dayot Upamecano have built their careers there. Konate is just another in the line-up, with the 19-year-old flourishing this season. A commanding centre-back, the Frenchman is a younger version of Virgil Van Dijk.
Fast, great in the air and tall, Konate is the definition of a modern centre-back. Not only is he a no-nonsense defensive wall but his confidence with the ball at his feet is incredible, alongside his vision and ability to pick a teammate out.
Furthermore, RB Leipzig’s system and style of play are very similar to what Liverpool do, which should make the transition easy for Konate. His form and incredible talent have rightfully earned him interest from some of Premier League biggest clubs.
Given Klopp’s history with youngsters and the club looking for a new centre-back, the move would be a match made in heaven.
