Liverpool’s defence would become much more stronger if they splash €35m on this rising Ligue 1 star in the summer

Why Liverpool should go all out to sign Ferland Mendy in summer

According to a report from the Sport, Lyon have put a price-tag on left-back Ferland Mendy.

Ferland Mendy, 23, has been excellent for Lyon this season and his performances have caught the attention of a number of the clubs this season including Barcelona. Lyon probably are aware that their defender is wanted by a host of clubs and have thereby put a price-tag of €35m-40m.

That said, Liverpool must enter the race for the signature of Ferland Mendy in the summer. Andy Robertson is the first choice left-back for Liverpool at the moment and the Scot has done a great job since joining the club from Hull City in 2017.

He has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League after a really slow start to life at Anfield.

However, Liverpool do not have a suitable backup for Robertson as Alberto Moreno has often struggled whenever given a chance by Jurgen Klopp. Klopp is clearly unconvinced by Moreno and could release him when his contract expires in the summer.

The Spaniard is the main back-up to Robertson but as the Reds appear to offload him from their books in the summer, Klopp might have to move for another left-back in the summer.

Ferland Mendy would be an excellent option for Liverpool to consider. The one-cap France international of Senegalese descent has not only gone onto become one of the key figures for Bruno Genesio’s Lyon this season, but it’s now one of the best left-backs in Ligue 1.

The 23-year-old is blessed with raw pace, technical ability and solid defensive skills. He combines physicality with his technical attributes to terrorise the opposition and is also a massive goal threat.

A dynamic and direct runner, Mendy is also sound as far as his positioning is concerned, and his crossing has improved as well, and he possesses plenty of stamina and pace.

The former Le Havre starlet is a fullback capable of doing his job at both ends of the pitch. He is a very good defender, and it’s rare to see Mendy get dribbled past by the attackers. He likes to push on as high as possible, and has a say in the attacking third as well.

There is no doubting Mendy’s ability and he has all the attributes to thrive in Klopp’s high-octane, attacking system.

He is just 23, so his best years are possibly ahead of him and a move to Liverpool certainly will be a big step in his career.
