Man United beating Liverpool to land £44m World champion in January could be a masterstroke

Why should Manchester United sign Benjamin Pavard

According to latest reports in Liverpool Echo, Liverpool are beginning to show interest in French defender Benjamin Pavard, who won the World Cup with his national team this summer and scored the goal of the tournament.

Mirror states that the 22-year-old defender poured cold water on rumours that German champions Bayern Munich had a pre-agreement for a fee of around €32m. Pavard was quoted as saying:

The World Cup arrived sooner than I expected, even for me. My plan was to stay another season in Germany. I am at a very big club with fantastic fans. I have signed nothing. (Mirror)

The Frenchman is currently playing for Bundesliga club Stuttgart, who sit at the bottom of the table after two league games.

Amidst all these developments, Manchester United also targeted Pavard in the summer transfer window, only to know that he isn’t available for a transfer this year. The price tag was then quoted to be around £44m.

However, here’s why the Red Devils should renew their interest in the player before their rivals swoop in:

Man United need a right-back

At the current point in time, Manchester United have two right-backs in Antonio Valencia and Mateo Darmian. While the former is ageing (33), the latter isn’t really a first-choice in the eyes of Jose Mourinho.

Hence, it would perfect sense if they go for a young defender who can easily slot in at right-back and also at centre-back. Pavard has a massive potential to become one of the best. If his World Cup performances are anything to go by, United must press on for a deal to sign the player.

The fact that the 22-year-old can play at both right-back and centre-back adds an extra dimension to Mourinho’s squad which currently looks susceptible at the back. Man United do need a solid defender who is dynamic, so Pavard won’t come in as a luxury player.

Verdict

There are two prospects here for the Red Devils – firstly, to disrupt the player’s links towards their rivals Liverpool, and secondly, to get a player who is wanted by some big names, for instance, Bayern Munich.

And above all, United need a quality defender who can be trusted by the manager, and Pavard fits that bill.
