Man United beating Real Madrid to land this world-class Argentine would be a massive statement of intent

Why Man United must beat Real Madrid to sign Mauro Icardi in January

According to a report from Football Espana, Real Madrid have rekindled their interest in signing Inter Milan hitman Mauro Icardi.

Inter Milan failed to progress to the knockout rounds of the Champions League after being held to a draw by PSV Eindhoven last week. Failure to advance to the next round has paved the way for Real Madrid to make a move for Mauro Icardi in January as the Spanish giants lookout for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mauro Icardi, 25, already has scored 12 goals for the campaign, including four in Inter’s Champions League group games. Now with Real Madrid reigniting their interest in the Argentine, Manchester United should rival the European champions for the player’s signature next month.

Manchester United are hardly lacking attacking options, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all in the squad. Lukaku is the club’s first-choice striker and after a good debut season at Old Trafford, he has struggled with form and fitness this season.

The Belgian international has been in and out of the team in recent weeks but got himself on the scoresheet against Fulham. However, he found himself relegated to the bench for the following game against Arsenal. In a nutshell, Lukaku’s second season at United has not gone according to the scripts and without his goals, the Red Devils have floundered.

Lukaku clearly needs support up front, which Alexis Sanchez, signed amidst a lot of fanfare earlier in January from Arsenal, has failed to provide this season. So, signing a new striker in January would make complete sense for Solskjaer, and Mauro Icardi would fit the bill perfectly at United.

Icardi has developed into one of the best strikers in world football since his breakout 14/15 season at Inter. The prolific Argentine striker scored 29 goals last season and has 11 to his name already this campaign. His arrival would make Jose Mourinho’s side one of the most potent teams in the attack.

Mauro Icardi

The Argentine is a technically-gifted player who is just deadly in front of the goal. Icardi combines his technical abilities with his sudden burst of pace and nimble feet to create space for himself. The 25-year-old is a player with a good eye for a pass and has the ability to play his teammates in behind the backline with incisive passes.

He likes to work in the channels in the final third and draws the defenders out from their positions, allowing others to pull the strings.

Icardi has bagged over 20 goals in three of the last four seasons, highlighting his excellent finishing ability. If United are to add goals to the side, Icardi is the man to target. He is approaching the best years of his career and there is no better time to bring him to the Premier League.

Arsenal vs. Inter Milan

We look at things/stars/entities that were not around when Arsenal last took on Inter Milan in the Champions League

It’s been over 20 years since that night at San Siro when Arsenal hammered Inter Milan, 5-1. The year was 2003, and that season Arsenal went on to become Invincibles, a feat still marveled at by fans and pundits alike.

After a 3-0 thrashing at Highbury, Arsenal were equally rampant in Italy as well. On the 25th of November, Thierry Henry fired Arsenal into the lead, five minutes before the half-hour mark. However, Christian Vieri’s deflected shot went past keeper Jens Lehmann, leveling the score for Inter Milan.

The second half was all Arsenal. After taking the lead before the 50th-minute mark through Freddie Ljungberg, the North London club were ruthless in the ending stage of the game. Henry, recently resigned from sporting director Edu and Pires made it 5-1 to Arsenal.

Here, we look at 5 entities/things that didn’t exist the last time Arsenal played Inter Milan in the Champions League.

The North London-I Nerazzurri connection: Alexis Sanchez and other players who have represented both Arsenal and Inter Milan

Alexis Sanchez

A detailed look at some of the top stars/players who have represented both Arsenal and Inter Milan

Arsenal and Inter Milan are two of the biggest names in Europe, and it would be every player’s team to represent either one of the teams. However, there have been a few privileged stars who have donned the red/white as well as the blue/black.

We take a look at 6 players who have played for both Arsenal and Inter Milan:

Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez is one of the greatest Arsenal players in the Emirates era. Having signed for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal back in 2014, he quickly got settled at the North London club. Taking the role as a winger, the Chilean went on to score 60 goals for Arsenal in the English Premier League in just 122 appearances. He even finished third in the golden boot race for the 2016/17 season.

However, his career went downhill after his departure from Arsenal in early 2018. Joining rivals Manchester United, Sanchez never found the rhythm for the Red Devils, and he was loaned out to Inter Milan in 2019/20. And the same year, in 2020, he joined Inter Milan, playing for the Italian club until 2022. He once again joined them in 2023, and was at the club for another season.

Patrick Vieira

The talismanic Patrick Vieira joined Arsenal in 1996, from AC Milan. After almost a decade at the North London club, the Frenchman moved to Juventus in 2005. After a year at Juventus, Vieira joined Inter Milan in 2006, and was a key part of the club until 2010.

Vieira is one of the very few players to have played for both the Milan clubs and Juventus. He ended his career in 2011, having last played for Manchester City.

Dennis Bergkamp

Dennis Bergkamp ended his career at Arsenal. However, before his near-12-year stint with the North London club, he was an important player in Inter Milan’s lineup. The Dutchman made 52 league appearances for the Italian giants, and scored 11 goals.

Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu burst into life only at Arsenal. The lanky Nigerian, however, was a part of Inter Milan for three seasons. However, he never really got starts for the Italian club.

In his three years at the club, Kanu made just 12 league appearances, scoring just 1 goal for them.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s arc is quite similar to that of Alexis Sanchez’s. While the Chilean went the other way (to Manchester United), Mkhitaryan joined Arsenal in a shock swap deal.

Although, Mkhitaryan’s contribution to Arsenal was significantly better than that of Sanchez’s, it never lived up to the expectations. After two years at the club, including a loan spell at Roma (2019/20), Mkhitaryan joined Roma in 2020. After two years at the club, he joined Inter Milan, where he currently plays.

Honorable Mention: Lukas Podolski

Lukas Podolski’s stint at Arsenal is quite underrated. The German made 60 appearances in the league, scoring 19 goals, quite a decent haul. Towards the end of his stay at Arsenal, Poldi hardly got starts, and joined Inter Milan on loan in 2015. He went on to make 17 league appearances for them.
