Man United completing a deal for their 17-year-old prodigy would be a positive step towards a bright future

Manchester United opinion: United should hand Greenwood a new contract

According to The Metro, Manchester United are looking to give their teenage sensation Mason Greenwood a new contract that will keep him at the club for the foreseeable future. This would provide the Old Trafford faithful with some optimism in what has been a stop-start transfer window.

The likes of Marcus Rashford have already signed a contract and David De Gea is set to sign one soon. Paul Pogba looks like he’s staying and Anthony Martial signed a new deal in January.

United endured a bizarre season but things couldn’t have been worse when they lost 3-1 to their bitter rivals Liverpool in December last season.

When things are put in perspective, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done enough to sustain a side that can compete for the top-4 spot next season. He’s added some energy into the team with the signings of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James of Swansea.

He’s also presided over a very young team that has had a very successful pre-season to keep the positivity on the up after years of toxicity. One of the most impressive players on tour has been the 17-year-old Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood is a phenomenally gifted footballer. He is ambidextrous and has torn up the youth leagues for Manchester United in the last two seasons. He can shoot, dribble and pass with both feet. He even takes free-kicks with both feet.

He made his first appearance for the first-team in the comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and United will be hoping that he can be a part of more nights like that. United have a history of producing the best young players since the 1960s and have continued that tradition till date.

They already have the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira and Paul Pogba representing the first-team regularly.

Not many clubs in England can claim to say that, and Greenwood has every reason to believe that he could be added to that list as soon as the upcoming season.

Along with Greenwood, there are the likes of Angel Gomes, James Garner, Axel Tuanzebe and Tahith Chong, who could see themselves be a part of the first-team that’ll be taking part in the Europa League to get some game time and develop themselves into players who could play in the first-team.

Conclusion

Greenwood isn’t the signing that United fans might be looking at with not too long to go for the transfer window to close but he would be another positive sign.
