Man United completing a deal for this world-class Spaniard would breathe positivity around the club

Manchester United Opinion: Why De Gea must sign a new deal at United

According to a report from BBC, David De Gea is set to finally end the uncertainty over his future by signing a new long-term contract with Manchester United once the club returns from their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

The Spanish goalkeeper, 28, is about to enter the final year of his deal and will be free to talk to clubs abroad from January. However, talks resumed earlier this month and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes David de Gea will commit to United long-term.

The Reds have encountered frustration in their attempts to strengthen a squad that finished sixth, 32 points behind cross-town rivals and champions Manchester City, last season.

Solskjaer has made just two signings this summer, with Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka arriving at Old Trafford from Swansea City and Crystal Palace respectively.

However, United generally are not in the best state ahead of the new season and facing plenty of competition from a strong set of rivals in the Big Six. In the midst of chaos, retaining the services of the world’s one of the best goalkeepers would be a major coup for Solskjaer.

Despite having a rather underwhelming 2018/19 campaign by his own standards, De Gea is still considered one of Manchester United’s best players.

He has been the definition of consistency in his time at Old Trafford and while he received a lot of criticism from all corners of the world for his error-strewn performances between the sticks last term, Solskjaer remains unfazed and sees the Spaniard as his no.1.

De Gea has won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League with the Reds. He has only won the title once in England, back in 2013, but of even greater concern is that in the following five seasons he has not even been involved in a title race.

But Solskjaer is rebuilding the United squad with young, exciting and hungrier talents and retaining all of the best players in this off-season so that they can challenge for trophies in the upcoming campaign is an absolute necessity for the club.

The Spanish international is one of the most important players, still only 28-years-old and has made 347 appearances for United already.

He is already settled at Old Trafford, loved and adored by the fans and overall it’ll be a move that will help both the player and the club as Solskjaer’s side aim to challenge for the title next season.

Verdict

It seems like Solskjaer and United have won the fight of keeping hold of De Gea, who is soon expected to sign on the dotted line in the Old Trafford board rooms.
