Man United going all out for their £36m summer target in January would work wonders

Why Dani Olmo would be a brilliant signing for Manchester United

Back in July, reports in Croatia (h/t The Sun) claimed that Manchester United had launched a £36m bid for Dinamo Zagreb playmaker Dani Olmo.

Dani Olmo, 21, was in blistering form last season for Dinamo Zagreb and was crowned Croatia’s Player of the Season. He netted 12 times and assisted another 9 while continuing his fine form at the European Under-21 Championships this past summer. The playmaker scored in the final as Spain won 2-1 against Germany and was crowned man of the match in the process.

The Spaniard has hit the ground running in the new campaign, scoring 7 goals in 19 appearances across all competitions so far. Olmo scored a fantastic volley in Zagreb’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday.

With the 21-year-old impressing at Dinamo Zagreb over the last two campaigns, Manchester United must renew their interest in Olmo when the transfer window reopens.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preference for signing younger, hungrier players has worked well, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James and Harry Maguire all impressing this season.

But the Red Devils still lack quality in certain areas of the pitch and Solskjaer should address those problems in January if he’s to bring Champions League football back to Old Trafford next season.

Jesse Lingard has impressed in recent weeks, especially in the consecutive wins over Tottenham and Manchester City, but there is still a lack of cutting edge from the midfield, a problem exacerbated by the current injury absence of Paul Pogba.

United have found it difficult to open up stubborn defences this season and that’s why adding a creative midfielder should be one of Solskjaer’s main tasks in January.

Given the Norwegian tactician’s inclination towards bringing in young, exciting and hungrier talents to Old Trafford, Dani Olmo would fit the bill perfectly.

A No.10 by trade, Olmo is extremely versatile in nature as he can play in different positions in the attack as well as in a withdrawn role in the midfield.

The 21-year-old has an incredible passing range and is an outstanding distributor of the ball. He can link up well and create openings in the final third for his teammates.

The Spaniard is also a threat from set-piece situations and would be a straight upgrade over the ageing Juan Mata. In the video below, one could get a glimpse of Olmo’s style of play and the qualities he possesses in his locker.

Verdict

Recruiting an attacker of Olmo’s potential will undoubtedly bolster Solskjaer’s forward options significantly at United.

The Spanish playmaker will not only add a lot of creativity to United’s play but also help them compete for major trophies in the coming years. Hence, the Red Devils should consider going all out in their pursuit of the Dinamo Zagreb star next month.
