Man United have dodged a bullet after failing to sign this U21 Euro winner in the summer – Here is why

Manchester United failed to land Dani Olmo after bidding £23.5m for the Spanish star

Dani Olmo was one of the stars for Spain as they lifted the U21 Euros in the summer.

The 21-year-old has starred for Dinamo Zagreb in recent years after joining from Barcelona.

The Spanish star plays in an attacking role and was linked with a move to Manchester United, according to Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti (h/t Sun).

There was interest in him from Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bayern Munich too (h/t Sun).

United made some big signings this summer with Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka joining the club.

However, the Red Devils missed out with a bid of £23.5m for Olmo (h/t Sun). The report claims that Zagreb want to keep the Spaniard till they reach the Champions League group stages, and then could sell the youngster.

United might not have signed an attacking midfielder in the summer, but they dodged a bullet by not splashing on the Spaniard.

A risky signing for a top Premier League club

Manchester United haven’t had great transfer windows under Jose Mourinho before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came to the fray.

Even this summer window felt incomplete after the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan, however, Olmo would not have been the right choice for the club.

The Spaniard plays as an attacking midfielder, though he can do the job as a striker too. However, the Red Devils are blessed with quality attackers such as Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford.

The trio can slot into different positions in the attack too, which gives Solskjaer room to mix up his starting XI.

Further, the Red Devils seem to be promoting a lot of youth team players this season with Andreas Pereira doing well against Chelsea.

Daniel James came off the bench to score for United against the Blues while Mason Greenwood is also expected to do well this season.

Signing Olmo would hamper the development of these young players, and there is no guarantee the Spaniard would hit the ground running from the first day.

Fred, last summer’s signing, is still to show his best at United while David de Gea took the best part of two seasons before he got to grips with the Premier League.

Verdict

United can do with another quality attacker joining, however, they need someone who is the finished article.

Olmo has the potential to become a fantastic player but he isn’t what United need at the moment.
