Man United letting go of £30m star would be a massive blunder – Solskjaer can get the best out of him – opinion

Manchester United opinion: Solskjaer should keep hold of Eric Bailly

ESPN (h/t Sun) has reported that Manchester United star Eric Bailly has attracted interest from Real Madrid. The Los Blancos are on a rebuilding mission, having already signed Eder Militao and Rodrygo, but believe that the Ivory Coast star can add some depth the team.

Bailly has experience in Spain, having played for Villarreal before joining Manchester United in the summer of 2016 for £30m. However, things haven’t always gone according to plan for the 24-year-old, spending a lot of time on the bench this season under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Bailly has had better days. He was arguably the best player for Manchester United in his first season. It showcased the best of the 24-year-old’s skill-set.

A solid defender on his day, the Ivorian epitomises the modern defender. Comfortable in defending one-on-one and very quick off the ground, these were the attributes former manager Jose Mourinho saw in him.

The likes of Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and even Phil Jones were a big part of Louis Van Gaal’s set-up, however, they failed to make an adequate impact, which is why Jose Mourinho added Bailly to the ranks.

Bailly showcased all that he had at his disposal in his debut season. This is why Manchester United need to keep him at the club, and not let him go. Even at this moment, barring Victor Lindelof, the Red Devils do not have a reliable centre-back.

They have been linked with a catalogue of players over the last few months (Manchester Evening News), and that is no surprise given the state of their defence. Offering Phil Jones a new deal has already looked like a bad move

Eric Bailly has only made 17 appearances in all competitions this season and those numbers need to improve in the near future. If there is anyone who can help Bailly return to form, it’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The new Manchester United manager has managed to get the best out of Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Lindelof. This proves that Solskjaer might be able to do the same for Eric Bailly.

Conclusion

The 24-year-old has it in himself to become a solid and reliable defender for the club, but only if he’s played in his best position. Alongside Victor Lindelof, the two can form a formidable partnership in defence, maybe even a title-winning combination.
