Man United reviving their interest in one of Serie A’s best would solve a crucial problem for Solskjaer

Manchester United opinion: The Red Devils should sign Alessio Romagnoli

In less than two weeks’ time, the Premier League’s transfer window will close for the summer.

This will, therefore, be a crucial two weeks for Manchester United, who really don’t have a squad capable of forcing their way into the top four next season.

A title challenge is a distant dream next term, instead, the aim for the Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his first full season should be to take back the club to the Champions League with a top-four finish.

So far this summer, Solskjaer has managed to sign only two new players, Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Daniel James from Swansea City.

With the transfer window to slam shut next week, the Norwegian tactician has to push the club’s hierarchy to complete deals for a defender and a midfielder.

The United boss needs to bolster the defence which shipped 54 goals in the Premier League last season. Victor Lindelof was the only bright spark in the club’s defence and is likely to be Solskjaer’s first-choice centre-half this season.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were inconsistent once again, while Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly endured an injury-hit 2018/19 campaign.

Back in February, the Sun claimed that United were plotting a summer swoop for AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli. The links may have cooled down in recent months but Solskjaer’s need for a central defender means the time is ripe for the Reds to reignite their interest in Romagnoli.

Romagnoli, 24, is currently regarded as one of the best defenders in the Serie A. He has been a consistent performer at the back for Milan in the last couple of seasons. The 9-cap Italy international is known for his technique, distribution, aerial strength, and decision-making.

The 24-year-old is excellent when it comes to playing out from the back, a trait that is essential in Solskjaer’s system. The Italian’s leadership qualities would make him the right fit for a leaky United rearguard and at 24, he is already a commanding presence.

Lindelof is arguably United’s best central defender at the moment. He needs a reliable partner and Romagnoli would simply be perfect. Being left-footed, he’ll add balance to the backline as well. The Italian has all the qualities to succeed in the English top-flight.

Verdict

What United have is the urgent need for a new central defender in order to boost a defence that leaked over 50 goals last season. And Romagnoli would be the right man to solve Solskjaer’s problems at the back.
