Why Manchester United must go all out to land Jerome Boateng

Premier League giants Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign £50m-rated Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich, claims the Daily Mail.

Boateng, 29, had a disappointing World Cup as Germany were knocked out of the group stage in Russia. Despite a poor World Cup, the centre-back is valued at £50m by Bayern but should Manchester United make a move for Boateng?

Jose Mourinho must procure defensive reinforcements ahead of the season opener against Leicester City next week. United have signed three players this summer, and with a few days remaining for the transfer window to end, they must act swiftly.

The Red Devils need a fresh player to tighten up things at the back next season after relying on inconsistent performers like Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo for far too long.

Mourinho did sign Eric Bailly in the summer of 2016, and although he has impressed, his injury problems have seen him struggle to establish himself at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Victor Lindelof has done well but is yet to fully adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

So, signing a player like Boateng makes sense and he would fit the bill perfectly at Old Trafford. Boateng is one of the best players in his position in the past five years and has been a part of Bayern Munich since leaving Manchester City in 2011.

The German wall has spent seven seasons at Bayern, making over 300 appearances for the club. During that time, he won six Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and a Champions League trophy. He has been a commanding figure at the back for the Bavarians and he would add a lot of steel to United’s backline.

Boateng has also had his fair share of injury problems but when fully fit, the German is an assured player to have in the defence. The 29-year-old is strong, agile, and confident with the ball at his feet and can walk into the starting XI of any elite European club. He is a leader at the back and Boateng would be an able partner for Bailly.

Being comfortably two-footed is one of the key assets top-level centre-backs need in the modern game. Very few players in the world do it better than Boateng, particularly when it comes to bringing the ball out from the back and starting an attack.

Boateng will turn 30 this year. Age is just a number and the German is still considered as one of the best centre-backs in the world. He is a serial winner and would certainly thrive in Mourinho’s system at Old Trafford.

If Boateng is looking out for a fresh adventure, a move to United should be considered. He failed to make his mark earlier at Manchester City but this could be a great opportunity for him to do better.
