Why Man United should sign Mike Maignan to replace David de Gea
According to a report from the Express, Manchester United have intensified the scouting of goalkeepers as they fear David de Gea will not sign a new contract at Old Trafford.
David de Gea, 28, was offered a new contract earlier this year but the deal remains unsigned. His current deal expires at the end of this season and Manchester United fear that they could lose their star shot-stopper for absolutely nothing next summer.
Despite a mediocre 2018/19 campaign and an ordinary start to the new Premier League season, United still want to keep De Gea. But if the Spanish international has not penned fresh terms by January, the Red Devils may opt to cash in midway through the season.
De Gea has arguably been United’s best player over recent years, winning four of the club’s Player of the Year awards since 2014. But the Spaniard is suffering perhaps the worst run of form of his career to date, with him being at fault for Crystal Palace’s winning goal at Old Trafford last month.
Despite the ex-Atletico Madrid shot-stopper suffering a significant dip since last summer, it’ll be very difficult for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to find a replacement for him.
Back in May, a report from the Daily Star had claimed that United were interested in signing LOSC Lille goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, who was voted as the best goalkeeper in Ligue 1 after helping his side finish as runners up. While a move didn’t happen in the summer, the Red Devils must rekindle their interest and go for the French goalkeeper in January.
Mike Maignan, 24, played every game for Lille last season, conceding just 33 goals in the Ligue 1. His 15 clean sheets played a huge role in the club finishing 2nd in Ligue 1 and subsequently qualifying for the Champions League.
The highly-rated Frenchman is a dynamic stopper who is quick in making stops from close and long-range.
Despite possessing a 6ft 3in frame, he is exceptionally agile and his ability to anticipate danger makes him a really impressive shot-stopper. Maignan is a commanding presence in the box, with his reflexes being one of the best in the Ligue 1 last season.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old is good with the ball at his feet. Hence, a team can play out from the back with ease knowing that the keeper can pass it out even if hassled by the opposition forward. All in all, Maignan could be a hit at Old Trafford.
Verdict
Hence, Manchester United shouldn’t hesitate in making a move for Mike Maignan if De Gea is sold in January. He could be an ideal long-term replacement for the flying Spaniard.

New Manager Jose Herrera Seeks Turnaround
Atleti will enter the knockout rounds with a new manager after Jose Herrera was appointed head coach following the dismissal of Victor Martin, who failed to win any of his final 10 matches in regulation time. Herrera has overseen an upturn in fortunes with a 4-1 Copa de la Reina quarter final victory and a 1-0 away win over Levante at the weekend.
The Atleti boss faces a much tougher task on Thursday, especially as the hosts are yet to win a home game in the UWCL main draw this season. This is frankly concerning for a club of Atletico’s stature heading into such a crucial tie.
United Riding Nine Game Unbeaten Run
Marc Skinner’s side should carry significant momentum into Thursday’s first leg, having put together a nine game unbeaten run since losing 3-0 at home to Lyon in December. Man United have won each of their last five competitive matches, including a 2-0 win over Leicester at the weekend.

Marc Skinner’s side continued their unbeaten start to 2026 in the Women’s Super League with a deserved 2-0 victory over Leicester at the King Power Stadium. Swedish star Julia Zigiotti Olme was key to United’s win with a goal and an assist, while super sub Elisabeth Terland made the game safe late on.
United started brightly and were ahead after 13 minutes when Zigiotti Olme’s cross beat Olivia Clark and crept in at the far post. Melvine Malard was twice denied by Clark before halftime as United dominated but couldn’t extend their lead.
The pressure eventually told late on when Terland made the game safe. Zigiotti Olme won the ball back high up the pitch and fed Terland, who showed great footwork to fire a low shot across the goal to seal a deserved victory.

Hanna Lundkvist (6/10): Did a good job filling in. Had a chance from a corner but couldn’t keep her header down.

Dominique Janssen (7/10): Good shift alongside Le Tissier as Leicester struggled to cause problems.
Anna Sandberg (8/10): Strong showing from left back, always getting forward with good deliveries. Lucky to escape a penalty shout.

Hinata Miyazawa (7/10): Great partnership with Zigiotti Olme on show again. Sent in an excellent ball for Schuller.
Julia Zigiotti Olme (8/10): United’s best player by a distance. Broke deadlock with cross that crept in before teeing up Terland. Absolutely outstanding.
Lisa Naalsund (6/10): Really quiet showing after starring against Liverpool. Hooked just after the hour.
Jess Park (6/10): Not at her best as Leicester kept her quiet. Engineered a chance, but the ball got stuck under her feet.
